Kate is caught trying to cross the border and her husband is shot and her little girl lost. As a woman capable of bearing children she is taken to a centre where she is subjected to a barage of indoctrination and made into a 'handmaid'. She is allocated to a powerful member of the government to produce a child with him. His wife is jealous and resents her, although desperately wants her to produce a child for them. Kate is attracted to a Security Guard, and she becomes pregnant by him. She also learns of a Resistance movement through another handmaid. She assassinates the government official, and with the help of the Security guard, escapes into the mountains. Literary Slaughter 23 Nov 2004
By Matt
Format:DVD
After studying the novel, and reading several of Atwoods other works, I found this movie to be a gross misrepresentation of her dystopic masterpiece. Whereas the novel gained it's strength from ambiguity and ignorance the film tacks answers onto a story that was better off without them (Offreds name and Lukes fate being two obvious examples). The end is not only forced and non-sensical, but serves to undermine the sinister Republic of Gilead. This is all to say nothing of the uninspired dialogue and wooden acting. More than dissapointing; appalling.

Film review 25 Nov 2011
By Mike J
Format:DVD
This film provides a great insight into the Margaret Attwoods novel, allowing you to visually see what is trying to be created in the book.
The film however cannot be seen without reading The Handmaids Tale first as certain parts of the film jump from one chapter to another something that someone who hasn't heard/read the book would understand!

Awful adaptation 8 Nov 2009
Format:DVD
This is a dreadful adaptation of an excellent book by Attwood. The story is rich and subtle about the hypocrisy of society to women and how extremism can creep in behind the mask of plausibility. It has a surprisingly optimistic ending which this awful film dissipates.

This is a shockingly simplistic post apocalyptic "love" story. It is hard to credit that Pinter wrote the screen play and some normally excellent actors bothered to turn up. They must have been horrified by the results.

If you have read the book - don't buy.
If you haven't read the book - buy the book instead of sepnding any money on this travesty.

Handmaid's Tail- read the book!
This film does do the book justice but is a tad out of date feeling in 2010. The book was written by M. Attwood, and is a fabulous story- as are many of her books.
