5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Mrs. K. J. Sturdy on 21 Nov. 2010
Format: Hardcover
I have enough knitting and general craft books on my shelves to start my own library but this one has always been missing. I knew it was highly regarded and when I found this copy I jumped at the chance and I'm so glad I did.

I've been knitting for more than 30 years and have learnt by lots and lots of errors. If I'd had this book at the beginning I would have been a much better knitter from the beginning.

It isn't a book of patterns or even particularly heavy on design ideas but the techniques covered are honestly all you could ever need. For example it gives at least a dozen different ways of casting on and off for a project and anyone who's had a baggy cuff or socks which are so tight at the top you can't get them over your heel will understand that having this book at your elbow would prevent many tears of frustration. Her descriptions of each technique are well written and the drawings are very clear.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough, especially if you're thinking of giving a book to a new knitter. It might not appear as exciting or colourful as the many, very good, pattern books and designer books but will ensure that any knitter will be able to produce perfect results whatever the pattern being used.

This useful book, although written in the eighties, is as actual as ever. Of course, there are many new things in knitting since then ( magic loop etc etc) but essentials of knitting are the same, and they are covered comprehensively in this book. From cast-ons to cast-offs, decreases, increases.. you name it, Montse Stanley has written about it. Not a stitch dictionary or pattern book but useful reference for all those occasions when a help is needed to know 'how to'.
