Product Description

Product Description

Potters have been using traditional handbuilding methods for generations, but new methods are now eagerly being tried, inspiring a host of discoveries in contemporary ceramics. This book begins with an historical and cultural overview of world ceramics, then moves on to an introductory section for beginners. With the aid of clear instructions and step-by-step photos, the novice learns all the traditional handbuilding and glazing methods. In addition, the author's special interest in surface decoration introduces innovative new ways of monoprinting on clay and texturing with clay slips. Advanced students are then shown how to explore the exciting possibilities of paperclay. This comparatively new medium, which is extremely strong and versatile, allows artists to scale new heights of creativity. Fully illustrated with color photos, "The Art of Handbuilt Ceramics" includes all the information necessary to progress from beginner to artist.

Disapointing 29 Oct 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I have been a ceramicist and lecturer in ceramics for 15 years and I have to say this is one of the worst books on handbuilt ceramics I have come accross. The book only briefly mentions a few handbuilding and decorating techniques, which are inadequately described, and a great deal is missing from a book that does not live up to its title. If you are a ceramicist - experienced or a beginner please don't waste your money on this book.

Disappointed 5 April 2006
Format:Hardcover
I am interested in handbuilt ceramics and thought this looked good. It starts off well with good images and some inspiration but by the time I got midway through I found myself losing interest not sure if that is because I've seen the info better presented in other books or because it wasn't laid out well.
I'm more of an images person and if you are too then I suggest you look around a bit more and buy this as a last resort.

I have been a potter for many years and I found this book an inspiration. I have a collection of Sue Bruces' work and consider her an immensley talented artist. This is a MUST read!
