From the Inside Flap

There are books on the theory of coaching, and there are books on how to coach. This book fills the gap between the two.

In The Handbook of Knowledge–Based Coaching, a stellar international panel of more than twenty practitioners offer an overview of the major theoretical models and sources of knowledge that have contributed to current coaching practice. For each theory and knowledge area there are specific examples of how it might effectively be applied in a coaching engagement and recommended resources for further study.

Drawing on a wide range of academic disciplines, including psychology, adult learning, conflict management, communication, organizational development, and leadership, this book establishes the intellectual underpinnings of the profession. It also identifies alternative sources of wisdom, such as spiritual traditions and the self–help and human potential movements, and covers a range of specialized approaches, from narrative and somatic coaching to coaching for sustainability, to create a rounded picture of coaching′s origins and practices.

Along the way, it explores the challenges and possibilities of the contemporary work environment with all its pressure, structural complexity, and diversity, and the range of strategies available to the coach.

Whether you are an aspiring coach exploring the field, an experienced practitioner eager to expand your knowledge, or a leader, manager, or HR professional seeking to understand the scope and value of coaching, you will find The Handbook of Knowledge–Based Coaching an essential resource and an inspiring read.

From theory to practice does exactly what it says on the tin - and however obvious this sounds I have not found anything out there that attempts to do quite the same. It would be fantastic as a text book because it is clear, easy to read and extremely comprehensive. Exactly what I have been looking for! Highly recommended.

For far too long the world of professional coaching has wallowed in assumption, hope, vagueness and goodwill. As coaches we rarely know where our ideas have come from and even less what use we can make of them. This comprehensive book, edited by two of the world's leading coaching experts, is easy to read, authoritative and essential reading for any coach who professes to be professional. Declaration of interest - I have written a few chapters, but I find myself returning to the book again and again for the wisdom of what my co-authors have contributed.

This book is for anyone in managment! 1 Sep 2011
By Bruce Rosenfeld, MD - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I was drawn to this book being a physician often in management, and an individual with a keen interest and admiration for traditional coaching. This book skillfully explains the theories behind current coaching practice and describes in detail pertinent examples that brings these theories to life and creates a practical understanding that can be utilized in a variety of situations. I found the chapter on leadership, written by one of the editors, Diane Brennan, particularly fascinating. In the first part of this chapter, Ms. Brennan reviews a number of theories that describe the various leadership styles and techniques and references these completely. From there she proceeds in a step-by-step fashion to define how this knowledge is utilized in coaching applications. This information is exceptionally beneficial to anyone in a management position, essentially in any field. By breaking down leadership to its basic form; one easily recognizes that great leaders aren't necessarily born but can be created and developed. By learning these theories, one's own skills can be easily enhanced. There were a number of other chapters that were just as informative and practical; while the entire book gave me a profound appreciation for the field.

Without being in the field of coaching but often finding myself in a leadership and administrative role; I found this book easy to understand, well referenced and incredibly useful. I would recommend it whole heartedly to anyone in a management position; that strives to improve their own and their organization's efficiency and skills.

Great book and tool for all coaches! 30 Aug 2011
By Steve Whiteside - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The Handbook of Knowledge-Based Coaching is an absolute must read and a tool for any coach. I found it to be a great learning book as well as a tool kit to keep coming back to. The book is written in a remarkably easy to understand tone but at the same time keeps its academic reliability. It opened my mind to many new ideas that are very accepted in today's coaching practice.

This book gives you all the information to make that transition into evidence based model of coaching.
I find myself taking a look at different parts of this book before and after sessions I have with clients. It has great ideas that remind me of areas I can help my clients explore to find answers. The book also gives me a practitioner view point on many ideas such as leadership, dealing with different types of clients and reminders on different evidence based theory's that help me make choices on how I can work with a client.

Ultimately this book really is a treasure that I would recommend to anyone who is a coach, wants to become a coach or is an experienced coach. I believe that coaches will refer to this book time and time again for ideas and relevant information that will help them work with their clients.

A great resource for coaches and coach educators 24 Aug 2011
By Melinda Sinclair - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a great new addition to the coaching literature. For a coach who loves to bring theory to practice, this is a handy guide to browse for reminders about models and tools - and for ideas about new models and tools to explore further. The text itself does not provide enough depth for the reader to feel comfortable using the models and tools - and that was not the intention of the book. It does, however, provide lots of suggestions for additional reading.
The writing is clear and crisp, and the Coaching Application section in each chapter is a neat way to build the bridge from theory to practice. (Ironically, though, my favorite chapter - chapter 31 on the concept of coach maturity - is one that does not contain such a section. This is a thoughtful chapter about the scale and scope of the coach's learning journey.)
As a coach educator, I will definitely put this book on my list of recommended resources for coaches who are looking for ways to expand their coaching horizon beyond the basics.
