Product Description

Minerva, 1998

In a book of this kind, a reviewer can have fun seeking omissions or inadequate descriptions. I have played this game over several hours and I find that, for such a wide-ranging reference work, this one seems commendably free of fault... I welcome the reintroduction of this painstakingly compiled handbook

Current Archaeology, 1998

It is good to salute a reprint of the Handbook of British Archaeology by Lesley and Roy Adkins, originally published in 1982 as A Thesaurus of British Archaeology... It soon established itself as a classic work of reference with over 500 line drawings, and it is good to see that it is now in print again

As a latecomer to archaeology and what one now calls a 'mature student' I can think of no better book to have at ones side than The Handbook of British Archaeology by Lesley and Roy Adkins. Over the past five years, from an A level in Archaeology through Certificate and Diploma courses to an MA in Archaeology and Heritage, whenever I needed a 'kickstart' or guidance in a particular subject or period the Adkins book never let me down. It is the one book that I have found totally indespensible and I cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone who needs an everyday thesaurus on the subject.

Great stuff! 1 Aug 2004

Format:Paperback
I bought this book because a colleague of mine had it. The content is very easy to read, easy to understand, but not incredibly in-depth, although it is a great reference book to have with you at University AND on site too. I took it to work and everyone has leafed through it.
Its one of those really good handbooks that come in useful, so if you're about to start excavating something you haven't done before, you can find it in here to have more of an idea as to what you're digging up!

Highly recommended. 8 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
I am an amateur archaeologist and this is a fantastically useful and readable book. It covers pre-historic to post-Medieval archaeology with useful basic information on history, settlement, housing, burial and material culture for each period. But more especially it is a great field guide with amazingly clear and attractive illustrations for recognizing important artifacts, building types etc. So very useful not just for archaeologists on site but in museums as well. Since this book has been updated recently by a group of young academics it also includes all the latest thinking on the different periods. Although probably not detailed enough for serious students, there is an extensive bibliography to point any one wishing to go further in the right direction, and for the illustrations alone it is worth anyone remotely interested in British archaeology getting their hands on a copy. Highly recommended.
