5.0 out of 5 stars No Hammond enthusiast should be without a copy 10 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback
Only printed in 2011 at the price of $29.99, I picked up my copy for less than £6 inc free P&P. This is the first book to tell the Hammond organ story in FULL, from the lifestory of it's creator to the guys and gals who then went on to make it famous. Having said that, there are notable ommissions in respect of some famous British pioneers. For instance British born Harry Farmer (aka Chris Hamalton) IS credited in the Discography section whereas Robin Richmond, Keith Beckingham, Harold Smart are not....yet they all put the Hammond on the map. Of all the organists to ever use the Hammond and the ONLY one to be awarded 13 Gold Discs and one Gold Cassette for Sales figures, Klaus Wunderlich, although credited, seemingly is not worthy of having this honour mentioned! Those two negative comments aside, the whole publication which is packed with historic photos and printed on high quality paper, covers the whole Hammond story from A - Z ( though there never were any Z models!) Where other books on this subject matter miss out is they are not as comprehesive or as wide in their coverage. The author too has an easy style of writing and I found this book, despite being quite heavy in weight, hard to put down once I had opened it. You are not a true Hammond organ music lover if you don't own a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The way a book should B 30 Dec 2011
By Kas Anders - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
When I get a book on a subject of interest this is how I like it to be. Faragher's book delivers with a wealth of text, info, history, workings and personalities. He allows his own prefences to be known while keeping an open mind towards the readers' tastes.
Loaded with great photos throughout, both b&w and color, showing various model Hammonds, players, and clear internal and external shots of many Hammond and Leslie models.
This is not a "blue book" and does not give all specs for every model but provides applicable info for comparing (and selecting) between differing models. Thankfully, the author includes a section on Hammond's solid state organs and then on to past and current digital organs. I'm not a fan of digital organs but this addition is very welcomed with quotes direct from the creators and gave me a better understanding of differing approaches to the makers of digital organs.

The artist biography / discography takes up nearly half the book's pages and goes far and beyond the standard top-10 rock/jazz names. Here we get an introduction and more on many great but lesser known players (such as the great Walter Wanderley) covering a wide range of styles, although not as much on great gospel players as I would have liked or expected. No book / list can include everybody, so that's understandable.

Mark Vail's book "Beauty in the B" is also excellent, but if I had to choose I'd pick Faragher's book as first choice being there's simply more info to sink into and photos to pour over.
Kudos to the author, as well as the publisher (Hal Leonard).
This is how a book should B.

I was so pleased with the information found in this book. It is very well presented from the start to finish. I especially appreciate how honor was given to Mr. Hammond. This book would be highly recommended for anyone who desires a deeper understanding of the history of the Hammond organ.

5.0 out of 5 stars a "real" story about the Hammond Organ and her players 30 May 2012
By Michael B. Reed - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Finally....a real review of the Hammond Organ. To be an organist, one must play two hands, two feet, and do it well. This book explores all the greatest, and especially the early stars of the Hammond. Way back before Jimmy Smith and like players there were artists who really set the instrument apart in American music. Not everything was rock and roll or jazz....there was Big Band Music, popular music, the American Musical, and the like.
Jackie Davis, Earl Grant, Lenny Dee, Buddy Cole, Eddie Layton....these were the magnificent young men of the Hammond Organ! Let's not forget Ethel Smith, Ken Griffin, and the other fine purveyors of organ music which came into our homes daily on the radio and as accompaniment for the TV "Soap Operas" of the 5o's and 60's.
Learn about the instrument, it's use in churches all over the world, it's place in our homes and supper clubs [remember those?] and the tremendous numbers of organs which actually outsold the piano in the 60's and 70's.
This is the book.....better than "Beauty in the B", and better written, I believe. This is the one for knowledge and correct history of the Hammond organ Company and her incredible electric [NOT electronic] organ.
I have played the Hammond Organ in Supper Clubs and Hotels all my life; I've sold them, I've recorded on them, and I still play and love them....
Do yourself a favor: read the book, go buy a Hammond Organ, and enjoy yourself.
Peace.....
