Book Description

2 Dec 2011
This book tells the story of Hammer Films through previously unseen treasures from the companys archive. Beginning with the companys incorporation documents from 1934, and ending with promotional material from the 2011 release The Resident, The Hammer Vault presents original correspondence, lobby cards, script pages and rare photographs alongside a commentary from the people who made some of the companys greatest films.

Synopsis:

'This remarkable journey through the Hammer vault includes props, annotated script pages, unused poster artwork, production designs, rare promotional material and private correspondence. Hundreds of rare and previously unseen stills help to create a rich souvenir of Hammer’s legacy, from the X certificate classics of the 1950s to the studio’s latest productions.

Written and compiled by the official Hammer Films historian Marcus Hearn, and featuring exclusive contributions from the actors and filmmakers associated with the company, this is the most lavish book ever published on the legendary House of Horror.

Highlights include:
  ·  Letters to and from some of the company's stars
  ·  Pages from Peter Cushing's scrapbooks
  ·  Pages from the scrapbook of managing director Michael Carreras
  ·  Pre-production artwork, and poster artwork from films that were never made
·  Production designs
·  Rare and previously unpublished photos'

Review

"An absolute must for fans of classic horror." --Twitch Film

"Well worth the purchase price for any film fan or anyone who holds a special place in their hearts for the studio." --Monsters & Critics

"If you are a Hammer fan, The Hammer Vault will definitely satisfy your blood lust for information on the legendary house of horror." --Cool & Collected

"The Count of coffee table books and a lavishly, lovingly compiled edition that is essential for all the hounds of Hammer." --Cool Ass Cinema

"An overwhelming amount of goodies on every page." --Movies.com

"This is wonderful publication, not just for lover of all things Hammer, but for any lover of film." --Attack From Planet B

"This is a truly comprehensive handbook to beat all handbooks on all things Hammer. If you love horror, you'll really love this book." --Ain't It Cool News

"If you're a fan of horror, or just fascinated with the film industry, The Hammer Vault is a must have for your collection. If you know a horror fan, then this will make a perfect gift this holiday season. 5 out of 5 stars." --Sci-Fi Mafia

"Hearn probably could've killed my parents and I'd still have to tell you how awesome this book is." --Topless Robot

"Titan Books have released a book that cult film fans will be dying for." --Film School Rejects

"For horror buffs, this is not one to miss." --Geek Dad, Wired.com

"As someone who knows about Hammer, but who has seen embarrassingly few of their films, The Hammer Vault was ideal. It let me fill in the gaps, and mark down which films I needed to see. For the Hammer buff, the stories may be familiar, but the photo collections are first rate. For the young genre neophyte, the book may act as an education. It's way damn fun. --Crave Online

"You can practically smell the brittle script pages, the musty newspaper clippings, and the drippy contact sheets. What makes the images and text even more tantalizing is that, unlike the Hammer poster book, you can't find these things out in the real world. This is truly from the archive, capturing the brightest bits from the history of Hammer." --The Playlist

"Every page is packed with information and well-chosen visuals." Playback:stl

"It is so much more than a coffee table book. It is a history book wrapped in the guise of a coffee table book... I loved every page-turning moment, and the words made the collection of images more entertaining. Do yourself a favor, pick this book up, put it in plain sight and let everyone enjoy the wonderful world of Hammer Films." --Nerd Locker

"Not so much a coffee table book as a historical treasure trove" --Killer Reviews

"The book is every bit as compelling to read as it is to just look at." --High-Def Digest

"The design of this book is GORE-geous." --Comic Related

"The Hammer Vault is a thoroughly enjoyable stroll down one of the bloodier byways of memory lane, and for fans of the company, it will provide hours of diversion." --PopMatters

" For fans of 1950s and 1960s horror, sci-fi, camp, exotica, and shlock, this... book is a must have." --readjunk.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Hammer Vault, Titan Books 31 Dec 2011
Format:Hardcover
Titan have been releasing books dedicated to Hammer studios for the last four years inclusive now, and it's become a bit of a tradition each Christmas for me in particular to be leafing through their latest outing. The first three (The Hammer Story, Hammer Glamour, and The Art of Hammer) are all essential parts of the book collections of any Hammer - or even general cinema - fan. The first thing I noticed about this one is that it is not in the same format: whereas the others were portrait style, this one is landscape (keeping more so in line with other 'Vault' books that are currently on the market). There goes the relevance of the space I'd left on my shelf specifically for this one! The second difference is that there's no dust jacket with this new book. Otherwise initial thoughts on presentation are positive - the hardback cover is well designed and quality is very high throughout.

The point of the book is to chronologically present to the reader 'vault' materials on many of Hammer's better and lesser known movies, right from their first big genre success The Quatermass Xperiment, through to the present day for the revival movies Let Me In and The Resident. This includes promotional artwork, front of house stills, newspaper cuttings, posters, photographs from behind the scenes, script pages (sometimes scrawled on), magazine covers, production sketches, letters, etc. In fact just about anything you could think of. All of this is laid out 'scrapbook' style with each film also represented with a few paragraphs of text providing some background history and other nice details. Whilst nothing of this sort could ever be considered comprehensive (which would realistically be impossible anyway) it is beautifully presented, colourful, and insightful.
