Patrice Leconte's story of fantasies becoming reality is told in a mixture of flashbacks and anecdotal sketches. A 12-year-old boy becomes obsessed with his local hairdresser, a voluptuous middle-aged woman, who inadvertently gives him his first sexual experience. When he reaches middle-age he meets another hairdresser and is so smitten that he proposes marriage to her, which she gladly accepts.

A man has the dream of marrying a hairdresser since the childhood. Then he met the beautiful Mathilde, and was not shy to ask her to marry him in their first meeting. To his suprise, she agreed a month later when he visited the barbershop for the second time. From then on both of them felt like living in a dream. She found someone who truly loves her, and he found a beautiful and sweet hairdresser. They adore one another. Things don't seem to be able to get better. How will things develope from this point onwards?

It's a beautiful film about love, devotion and playfulness. The way they look at each other touches the bottom of my heart. Good acting. Sometimes funny. Playfulness is always in the air. Erotism appears often throughout the film. Overall speaking, I can recommend this film.

I found this a surprising film. It largely takes place in a small barber's shop. The main theme is the genesis and fulfillment of a lonely man's sexual fantasy of being married to a hairdresser, but the story is told in an unusual mixture of interactions with customers, exuberant dance scenes and sensual love-making. It is very funny most of the time, tempered with some sadness. Recommended.

If you find having your hair washed at the hair-dressers, the way the fingers massage your scalp through the wetness and slippery foam is in any way even only mildly erotic, then this is a film for you. Without ever showing any nudity, this film is super-charged with eros throughout.
The story is of little importance, although it is weird and strange. It's a quiet story of a man who falls in love with a hairdresser and marries her. Together the apparently ill-matched pair (he is a lot older then she is) seem to find fulfilment. Seem...
This is a film like only the French can make them - subtle, slow, emotional and oozing eros all the time.
One of my favourite films, ever.

I enjoyed this film very much inspite of the ending which might appear implausible to some. It was not a great film, yet as the story unfolded I felt drawn into the life of this man whose dream since childhood had been to marry a hairdresser. It delighted me to be absorbed by this rather whimsical story. However I suspect my partner liked it less. Unlike me he had no desire to buy this film (It was rented) The innocence around the childs obsession and the delicate eroticism haunted me and I know I shall watch it again.....this time on my own!

This film was shot in 2.35:1 widescreen aspect ratio. This Second Sight DVD is about 1.78:1, not as wide as it should be, scanned up (like they do when a film is shown on tv), so you don't see the full picture. Truly terrible. Look for the deleted Tartan DVD, which is in the correct widescreen, or better still, the DVDY French DVD (with English sub-titles), which actually shows the full picture, a tiny bit more than the Tartan DVD! That DVDY DVD may still be found on amazon.fr.

beautiful, erotic, haunting. Anna Galiena is incendiary, and Jean Rochefort is as humane as ever. Gorgeous. The top of my top ten.

I had seen this movie a while back and remember as being entertaining. It is similar to another of his movie-Monsieur Hire but on a lighter side. Jean Rochefort plays a man obsessed with hairdresser, particularly female ones since his chilhood was full of erotic memories with a quite full figure hairdresser pampering all his senses. His wife played by an attractive actress- Anna Galiena in the hairdresser for man only is soft spoken quiet and mysterious. She realizes their situation and has doubts on it's longivity. It has a few comedic moments but in all an interesting study of character. Language is french with korean and english subtitles and NTSC format, 101 minutes.

A film directed by Patrice Leconte in 1990, and starring the wonderfully expressive Jean Rochefort, an actor who could only ever be French.
If you read the synopsis of this film, you are likely to give it a miss. The lifelong obsession of the lead character, with the ambiance of Ladies' hairdressing salons, seems an unlikely story to provide entertainment.
You would be wrong though. It is a complete delight, from start to finish, and the quirky performances and restrictive sets, just add to the magic. With lead performances from Rochefort, and the delightful Anna Galiena, that can only be described as flawless. An absolute gem.
