Book Description

Just as a professional athlete doesn’t show up without a solid game plan, ethical hackers, IT professionals, and security researchers should not be unprepared, either. The Hacker Playbook provides them their own game plans. Written by a longtime security professional and CEO of Secure Planet, LLC, this step-by-step guide to the “game” of penetration hacking features hands-on examples and helpful advice from the top of the field.

Through a series of football-style “plays,” this straightforward guide gets to the root of many of the roadblocks people may face while penetration testing—including attacking different types of networks, pivoting through security controls, and evading antivirus software.

From “Pregame” research to “The Drive” and “The Lateral Pass,” the practical plays listed can be read in order or referenced as needed. Either way, the valuable advice within will put you in the mindset of a penetration tester of a Fortune 500 company, regardless of your career or level of experience.

Whether you’re downing energy drinks while desperately looking for an exploit, or preparing for an exciting new job in IT security, this guide is an essential part of any ethical hacker’s library—so there’s no reason not to get in the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting read 26 Jun. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The author talks you through downloading the best cracking dictionaries and password cracking tools. It contains information that you can't find anywhere else easily, and it's always practical and pragmatic. The authors focus is on getting the job done... There is no padding or waffle. A must have book.

4.0 out of 5 stars more for the growing intermediate 18 Sept. 2014

An excellent book with some good insights but not too much detail into anything. Well worth the read with some helpful advice but not quite enough information for an absolute beginner it's more for a developing intermediate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but definitely a "playbooK" 22 Oct. 2014
By PhysFan
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Good book as an insight into how someone else runs a pen-test with some interesting ideas and some real-world gotchas and pointers. Very little theory though and not much detail on many of the techniques so if that's what you're after this isn't really the book for you (in fairness, the clue to that should be in the title).

My biggest gripe really is that the edition I had (bought around July 2014) is absolutely *riddled* with typos, from simple misspellings to missing words, very odd phrasing and so on. There are lengthy stretches with one or more on literally every page. It's possible the author's first language isn't English in which case it's a great effort but could've done with a native English speaking friend or editor to give it the once over.

All in all well worth a look for the "plays" themselves though and very reasonably priced as these sorts of books go.

As the title says, its a practical guide. Sometimes the author skips steps and leaves you stranded but, overall, I'm enjoying it very much.
A good guide to know the tools and to get the job done.
