In 2007, The HDRI Handbook was the first book to present this revolutionary new field to a larger audience. These days HDRI is a fully mature technology available to everyone. Real estate and landscape photographers have adopted it as part of their regular workflow, it has become one of the hottest trends for ambitious amateurs and creative professionals alike, and the modern movie industry would be completely dysfunctional without it.

Now The HDRI Handbook 2.0 redefines its own gold standard. It has been completely rewritten and is packed with practical hints and tips, background knowledge, reference tools, breathtaking artist portfolios, and inspiring interviews. The book includes dozens of new step-by-step tutorials. Beginners will get a methodically solid introduction and advanced readers will be able to refine their technique to perfection.

Topics include:- Understanding the foundation of HDRI- HDR software comparisons and evaluations- Capturing HDR images: today and tomorrow- Tonemapping for creating superior prints- HDR image processing and compositing- Shooting and stitching HDR panoramas- Image-based lighting and CG rendering

2.0 updates include:- New cameras, sensors, and HDR beamsplitter rigs- Open Camera Controller for endless auto-bracketing- Correct RAW pre-processing and ghost removal- Dozens of practical, easy-to-follow tutorials- A structured approach to tonemapping, inspired by Ansel Adams- Set etiquette and tips for capturing HDR panos for visual effects- Seven artist spotlights showing unique perspectives on HDRI- Seven crossword puzzles: a fun way to test yourself

About the Author

Christian Bloch is a highly acclaimed Visual Effects Artists who has been working professionally in the field for years. He speaks the language of an artist, and he understands that a hands-on tutorial is a thousand times more valuable to the learning of HDRI than scientific formulas.

A native of Germany, he works and lives in Hollywood, California. His work can be seen in StarTrek: Enterprise, Smallville, Invasion, and a growing number of movies. He has been a pioneer in the practical application of HDRI in post-production, especially on a TV budget. Years of research and development went into his diploma thesis about HDRI, which was honored with an achievement award. Since that thesis was put online in July 2004, it has been downloaded more than 15,000 times, and has been established as the primary German source of information on HDRI. The HDRI Handbook is the successor of Bloch's diploma thesis, rewritten completely from the ground up in English, and heavily expanded and updated.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you'll ever need for HDRI 25 Jan 2013

I have the first version of this book on Kindle and hesitated to buy the physical product at first, but I'm so glad I did.

The book is substantial and has many new additions that newcomers and owners of the first edition will benefit from. It is exhaustive in it's exploration of the subject matter but not exhausting. The author writes in an entertaining and engaging style and it's hard not to be won over by his passion for this subject matter. Aside from the business of making HDR images there are tutorials, software, image examples from the bracketed exposures to the sIBL library all included on the DVD and even open source projects to improve the functionality of your camera.

If you're interested or exploring HDR for Tone-mapping, panoramas, CG-Relighting this will take you from knowing nothing, to shooting and producing excellent results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant in-depth guide to HDRI 23 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book should convince you to investigate the techniques of High Dynamic Range Imaging. The author includes many step-by-step guides to techniques using a variety of HDRI software, some of it freeware. Also included with the book is a DVD with example pictures for you to experiment with, a range of software and a host of other goodies. And if you're into experimenting with hardware, there's a couple of projects including one that modifies and programs a Nintendo DS console to control your camera's shutter for producing the necessary range of shots at different exposures (especially useful for Canon users many of whose cameras are limited to +/- 1 stop bracketing). Expensive, but well worth it.

Given the technical background of the subject this is an exceptionally easy read, extremely well compiled, also written with clarity and some appropriately placed humour. Haven't even got round to applying the exemplar 'lessons' yet, but already have found a greater and better understanding of the subject. Can't put it down!

2.0 out of 5 stars Too technical and not very readable 28 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I didn't enjoy this book at all. OK, HDR is an inherently technical subject but that doesn't mean books about it have to be turgid.
