Book Description

2 May 2013 The Greek Village Series
Cross at Dad, Abby, 17, boards a flight to Greece, but gets hopelessly lost and ends up in the wrong village. Alone, with very little money, no Greek and no way to contact her friend Jackie, who has lined up a bar job for her, Abby realises she has to stand on her own two feet for the first time… She meets Stella, who runs the local ouzeri - a rough and ready eatery were farmers gather to drink and take refuge from their domestic lives. Stella does not need a naive young English girl hanging around, and the ouzeri is not the glamorous bar that Abby had bargained for. But when events throw them together, the situation brings to the boil tensions that have been brewing for years, the ripples drawing in other people in the village, threatening Abby's ability to ever leave, culminating in shocking unforeseen events and the uncovering of dark secrets that change peoples' thinking about themselves and others permanently.

More About the Author

Sara Alexi was born in Oxford, England. She has travelled widely and now splits her time between her home in England and a tiny rural village in the Peloponnese, in Greece, where she is (very slowly!) renovating a ruined stone farmhouse, whilst observing the Greek way of life and absorbing the culture, to enrich her vision for both writing and painting.

Sara began writing later in life. In school English lessons were a time of confusion, books indecipherable hieroglyphics. Dyslexia was not well understood then and no support was available. The joy of reading and writing were cancelled by the teacher's red pen ...

Despite her dyslexia Sara qualified as a psychotherapist and ran her own practice for years. Her artistic nature was, at that time, confined to painting and she exhibited widely.

In a casual conversation with a client she discovered that Agatha Christie, Jules Verne and Hans Christian Andersen were all dyslexic, and Sara's perspective changed. The world of fiction opened to her with this shift in perception and she has been a prolific writer ever since.

Her 'Greek Village Series' has been very well received and provides a keenly observed, compassionate insight into the Greek people and culture, and the human condition in general. Watch this space for the next in the series, coming soon!

* The Illegal Gardener - Book One of the Greek Village Series

Book one of the Greek village series tells the story of one summer in the village from the perspectives of two outsiders, both recently arrived in Greece, but each from a very different back ground. Juliet is an English ex-pat who has bought a house in the village. Aaman is an Pakistani illegal immigrant looking for work. Juliet employs Aaman to help clear her garden, and the relationship that develops touches them both deeply and changes them both forever.

* Black Butterflies - Book Two of the Greek Village Series (Coming September 2012)

The second book in the series follows Marina, the village shopkeeper, as she embarks on a courageous mission to stop her daughter Eleni from making an unsuitable match. Eleni is enraged by her mother's meddling, but as the story unfolds we discover that both mother and daughter have guilty secrets that each dreads the other discovering. This is a moving, compassionate tale of love, heartache and forgiveness, that will make you laugh and cry.

* The Explosive Nature of Friendship - Book Three of the Greek Village Series

Mitsos has spent the last twenty years trying to comes to terms with the events of a single day and all that led up to it. In his twilight years a suprising turn of events gives him a chance to rectify his biggest wrong and give himself the peace he is seeking. But is what he has wanted for the last twenty years what he still wants now and is he the man he thought he was? Set against a backdrop of a small Greek farming village, comedy and tragedy are present in equal measures. Sara transports you to a land of sea and sun as she explores what it means to be human, and fallible. The book examines the nature of friendship, and how our choices and our perceptions of our place in society can define us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming story 17 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful book, the fourth in the series, my favourite so far. Like a growing band of Greek Village fans, we are hooked and eagerly await for the next episode. I have read three so far, out of sequence, but each book can stand alone. I must backtrack and fill in the gap. Sara Alexi weaves a rich tapestry of life in a close-knit rural Greek community, with fresh perspectives on old threads, embroidering the texture with sequins and pearls, teasing knots and unravelling bows, delivered at a pace appropriate. Even in a sleepy rural village, where simple lives are complicated, Gypsy Stella's routine pattern of life persists through misplaced gratitude for small mercies, however unsatisfactory she feels, routine helps her endure. Thus Stella has suppressed her heritage and dreams, until a lost and vulnerable young runaway awakens her to the possibilities of change. The last few chapters were a dream to read for me, with a broad Cheshire cat grin on my face. This series is crying out to be filmed and screened by the BBC, early on Sunday evenings; I'd watch it and I hardly ever watch the box! Lovely book, gentle humour, dramatic action, romantic, very human central and back stories that will surely warm the cockles of your heart. Don't miss this book ... and then follow up with the rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great summer read 14 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Struggling to find my next read after being so absorbed in the Greek Village series. A tough act to follow. All four books so far in the series have been wonderful, and have left me wanting more. I love the way the books fit like jigsaw pieces - they complement and complete each other, and yet they stand alone perfectly well. Each adds dimensions to characters we've met before. I can't wait to see - and cannot guess - who book 5 will be about.

Book 4 is again on the darker side - stereotypes and prejudices are tackled, along with some other serious and difficult issues. In this book it is interesting how the story is told from two perspectives, and these two main characters again offer a different perspective on events and characters in book 3. I might just have to go back to books 1 and 2 while I await 5.

Recommended to anyone who likes reading about warm, beautiful places and the lives of the people who inhabit them

5.0 out of 5 stars another delightful story 14 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book as much as the others in the series - a delightful, heart-warming and thought-provoking story which captures than wonderful Greek atmosphere but at the same time manages to create characters far from the stereotypes of Greek villagers.
And the way the narrative is interwoven with those of the other three books is original and very enjoyable.
Lookign forward to more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful ending 14 May 2013

This is a brilliant ending to the four books. I would love to see these books made into a tv series to get us through a horrible British Winter where we could imagine warmth, sunshine and olive groves.
