4.0 out of 5 stars Lament of the Melkur 27 Jun 2012
By Paul Tapner TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

Over the years many scripts have been written for Doctor Who that never got to the screen. Now, thanks to Big Finish audio productions who have taken some of these and adapted them into audio plays, we can find out what might have been.

This one features Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor, and Nicola Bryant as his companion Peri. It runs for four episodes of roughly thirty minutes each [approx] and is spread over two cd's.

It is based on a storyline written by a writer called Johnny Byrne, who wrote three Doctor Who stories that got to the tv screen in the 1980's. The first of which was the fourth Doctor story 'the Keeper of Traken.'

This story is a sequel of sorts to that.

It sees the TARDIS visit the planet of Serenity. The last surviving world of the Traken union. The Melkur, once of which was seen in the Keeper of Traken, are a species that come from Prophecy. And here many of the sleep in a state of suspended animation.

But an ancient evil also dwells here. That has been slumbering for a very long time. People are on the track of what lies hidden on the planet, and the whole universe may be in danger as a result....

Like all the best sequels this does strive to do something different, rather than just reprise the original. But despite having a world in a slightly similar style to Traken, there's really nothing much to link them, so it could really stand entirely on it's on it's own.

But the strength of this is in recreating the style of the show of the time. The script doesn't feel like something written exclusively for audio, it makes it feel as if you're listening to the soundtrack of a story from the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Saturday Tea-Time 1985....... 3 Jun 2012

There are times when Big Finish create something very special, bringing to life a strong, well written story with a top quality cast, good ideas, excitement, and all the elements that made Doctor Who such a success. This is such a story, beautifully bringing back the feel of Saturday night Doctor Who in 1985, with a very strong performance from Colin Baker, a delicious villain from Stephen Thorne (who might well have been cast in the role had this script been made in the 1980s), and a script that never stops being exciting, entertaining, and at times surprisingly clever. The incidental music and sound effects deserve mention, all being first rate and just right to help bring back 1985. The guest cast are all very good, and although this story is in many ways a sequel to 1981 TV story The Keeper of Traken, it is just as enjoyable for anyone not familiar with that story. The Lost Stories has been a gold-mine of excellence, in particular for Colin Baker, and anyone who has enjoyed previous sixth Doctor releases in this range will enjoy this one too. It's a pleasure from start to finish. Well done to everyone involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Melkur! 16 May 2013
By Keen Reader TOP 500 REVIEWER

This is another in the brilliant Lost Stories series. In this story, the Sixth Doctor and Peri are minding their own business when they stray into the area where they can hear the Lament of the Melkur. The Melkur are from a part of the Doctor's past that he doesn't really want to have to explain to Peri, but when the Tardis is drawn down to the planet of Serenity, the last surviving world of the Traken Union, they find themselves involved anyway.

The cover of this cd drew me to the story initially, as the immediately recognisable picture of the Melkur reminded me of the story of Traken, and the Fourth Doctor's struggle to save Nyssa's planet and the Keeper of Traken. So it was really good to be able to visit this part of the galaxy again, far into the future of what was Traken, and to have a story based on Serenity. Here, deep in the Labyrinth there is evil as well as good, and it is the battle for supremacy between these two forces that may yet threaten not only Serenity but many more millions of lives. Can the Doctor and Peri save the future?

The characters of the ruling Elect are a bit under-utilised in this story, but there are strong characters that show in their own right; in particular Auga and Ebbko, and Malador is suitably malevolent. The Doctor and Peri are well played by Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant and this is a story that would have translated well onto the small screen. Great stuff.
