Product Description

Product Description

After explaining the defence mechanisms - such as repression, projection and rationalization - by which we all make life easier to deal with, the author outlines how personality may be expected to develop in infancy, early childhood, the play age, the school age, adolescence, young adulthood, adulthood and old age. At each stage he asks: "What relationship, what issue concerns us most?, and describes satisfactory and unsatisfactory responses to each crisis. Psychological disturbances - and in many cases, moods and personality types we encounter daily - are interpreted as regressions from one stage of development to an earlier one. In this way Dr Lowe's book provides a framework within which to judge characteristics that defy neat labels. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

AN EXCELLENT BOOK 15 Feb 2011
By BrianB
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book because my old copy literally fell to pieces from so much use.

Psychological development "milestones". Combines studies by Freud, Erikson, and Piaget

Outlines how personality may be expected to develop during Erik H. Erikson's (1902-1994) 8 Stages of development. At each stage he asks "What relationship, what issue, concerns us most"? Describes satisfactory and the unsatisfactory responses to each crisis. Also considers regression to earlier stages, and how they are used in media advertising.

For some reason his actual age ranges for development stages differ from Erikson's. I guess we should not take them too literally - people are so variable.
