Product Description

Product Description

This illuminating work outlines the essential principles and techniques that define the art of ground fighting in most martial arts. More than 1,200 outstanding photographs introduce over 195 practical techniques encompassing all types of ground skills: chokes, head locks, joint locks, pins, ground kicks, sacrifice techniques, and defenses and counters from seated, reclining, and kneeling positions. Comprehensive introductory chapters provide an authoritative overview of important technical principles, East Asian energetic concepts, and 109 fundamental skills encompassing body positions, stances, footwork, ground movement, transitional movement, and common methods of tumbling and falling. Precise anatomical illustrations and descriptions of 106 common Oriental pressure points, and a visual comparison of different martial arts, make this an invaluable resource for all martial styles.

Expertly written and designed by the author of the 1,136-page Hapkido—widely acclaimed as the most comprehensive book ever written on a single martial art—this exceptional work is designed to stand alone, or function as a companion text with the author's other works on martial techniques and anatomy. Regardless of the style you practice, these books will enrich your training, improve your technique, and deepen your understanding of the unique qualities embodied in your own martial art.

As a martial artist (Ju-Jitsu), I was looking for a book to help develop my ground fighting skills. This book starts off with the very basics of breakfalls, before moving on to footwork, defence from the ground, different chokes, pinning holds, locks etc. I found the inclusion of meridian points a bonus, and although some of the early sections were not of much use - not specific to ground fighting, some of the later techniques were very good, in their illustration and explanation.
This book is also a hardback which is always an added bonus (too many books are paper back these days & don't last as long as they should!!)
the pictures and their print quality are excellent...
To summarise, i would say this book is a good all-round intro. to most aspects of a throwing/ grappling martial art, but I would have liked to have seen more ground work explored (given the title)...
If you're fairly new to martial arts, you'll really appreciate the scope of this book..If you're already a practioner, you'll probably pick up some pointers!!..

Solid book... 5 Feb 2003
By J. Higgins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Contrary to several other reviewers I think this is a great book. I've studied several martial arts including Judo and BJJ. I'm a good enough grappler to hold my own with most people. Many of the techniques in this book can be found in the current crop of BJJ books. The difference being this book has better pictures and text. That can make all the difference. There are a few techniques that I would skip over, but that could be said about any martial art book that I own.
I've always thought of Hapkido as Korean Jujitsu. It is wrong to assume that because a system has kicks it can't offer anything else. Don't pay any attention to the BJJ hype in some of the other reviews. This is a worth while purchase.

Excellent book for self defence 1 Feb 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
If you are a practicioner of Brazillian JJ, this book is not for you.

But if you intend to pick up a few new ideas on how to prevent yourself from ending up on the ground in the first place, or defending yourself with some unconventional techniques, read on.

Most of us who learn self defence do not want to roll around on the ground amongst the gravel and broken glass to defend ourselves against an attacker. This, along with the threat of multiple attackers, are weaknesses of the Brazillian JJ system.

None the less, Brazillian JJ should be studied because defending yourself on the ground is very important, and for this it is very good.

There are many other styles out there though, and Mr. Tedeschi shows some great escapes, counters and take downs which Martial Artists with an open mind, and not restricted by a "my style is the best" philosophy should appreciate.
