Marc Streitenfeld's soundtrack for the film, The Grey, worth hearing in its own right, whether you saw the movie or not. If you did see the movie, then you know how well it fit, evoking an atmosphere of winter, wilderness and isolation. And on occasion being hunted by wolves. But it also fits the themes of introspection, of being haunted by memories that come back to you when you're alone and thinking back on your life. Streitenfeld's use of strings and high-pitched lingering notes capture the crisp and brittle feel of landscapes of snow and ice, of air so cold its sharpness takes your breath away, of moving through eeriely silent trees in the heart of a great remote wilderness in winter, in which, in spite of your isolation, you are not alone.
Highly recommended for anyone who liked the film, for anyone who likes Streitenfeld's musical style, and for anyone who just likes to have something pensively atmospheric to listen to in the background.
