Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2.4 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Mono ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Black & White, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: A young Susannah York had her first lead role in this drama about a teenage girl on the cusp of womanhood. When her mother falls ill during a vacation in the French wine country, 16-year-old Joss Grey (York) is left to her own devices as she and her three younger siblings are left in the reluctant care of Madame Zisi (Danielle Darrieux), the proprietor of the hotel where they were staying. Eliot (Kenneth More), Zisi's strapping boyfriend, offers to show the youngsters some of the sights in the countryside, and Joss finds herself developing a strong infatuation with the older man. However, when she realizes that Eliot and Zisi are lovers, she becomes despondent and ends up getting drunk on wine with Paul (David Saire), a boy who works in the kitchen at Zisi's hotel. When Joss learns that Eliot is actually a jewel thief wanted by the law, she informs the police of his whereabouts. However, that same night, Paul's efforts to seduce Joss degenerate into a violent attempt at rape, but when Eliot hears her screams for help, he comes to Joss' rescue. Having spared her virtue and perhaps her life, Joss confesses to Eliot that she has turned him in to the police, and urges him to flee for his own safety. One of Joss' sisters is played by Jane Asher, a distinguished actress who was most famous in the United States not for her abilities as a performer, but for spending several years as Paul McCartney's girlfriend. ...The Greengage Summer ( Loss of Innocence ) ( The Green Gage Summer )

Set in the Champagne region of France, a 16 year old girl (Susannah York) on holiday with her mother and three siblings must take charge of the younger children after her mother is taken seriously ill to a hospital. At the country chateau where they're staying, they meet a mysterious Englishman (Kenneth More) who takes a fancy to the visitors which disturbs his mistress (Danielle Darrieux), the inn's proprietor. "Coming of age" films are plentiful and usually predictable but this one is special. Based upon the novel by Rumer Godden, Director Lewis Gilbert (THE SPY WHO LOVED ME) manages, for the most part, to avoid the cliches of the genre while walking a fine tightrope to avoid the Lolita-esque elements inherent in the screenplay which lesser film makers may have fallen prey to. The young York (in only her third film) blooms and glows in the role of a girl entering womanhood and all the conflicts that come with it, though I must confess the puffy looking and aging Kenneth More seems an unlikely fantasy for an adolescent girl. The striking cinematography is courtesy of Oscar winner Freddie Young (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA) and the delicate score by Richard Addinsell. With Jane Asher, Maurice Denham and Bessie Love.

The English DVD via Sony home video is a full screen transfer rather than wide screen but I suspect much isn't loss at it appears to have been intended for a 1.66 aspect ratio for theatrical exhibition. The picture itself is nice.

Generally overlooked (even forgotten?) in recent years, this heart-warming coming of age 1961 British drama combines fine screenplay and direction with standout performances from all three leads, Kenneth More, Danielle Darrieux and Susannah York. Plus a beautiful French setting. It's a film that I had been after for ages (can't remember when it was last seen on television) and, having obtained a copy just a couple of weeks ago, comes the very sad news of Susannah York's death. So double the reason for seeking it out: not only a superlative "older man-younger girl" drama, sensitively played, but also the chance to see one of Britain's finest actresses in one of her earliest roles. That makes the film even more poignant. She will be greatly missed.

Kenneth More was surely one of the finest British screen actors of his generation. In this film adaptation of Rumer Godden's excellent novel'The Greengage Summer'he played a villain-of sorts-but,of course,we loved him!The young Susannah York showed promise as a teenager caught up in her first crush.Danielle Darrieux had our sympathy in the maturer role of a mistress captivated with More's character, risking her heart and livelihood by covering up his illegal activities and hiding him in her hotel on the Marne. However, for me,what made this production stand out was cinematography that captured the Champagne growing area around the Marne as it really is-no irritating 'special effects'-just green vineyards, shady canals, cool caves-and a greengage,or two!

Nothing special
Some great actors, but the film is neither here nor there. It justs plods along and seems to get nowhere...slowly!
Worth a look but not one to rush out and buy.
