Product Description

Including many of the greatest stories ever told - the labours of Hercules, the voyage of the Argonauts, Theseus and the minotaur, Midas and his golden touch, the Trojan War and Odysseus's journey home - Robert Graves's superb and comprehensive retelling of the Greek myths for a modern audience has been regarded for over fifty years as the definitive version.

With a novelist's skill and a poet's eye, Graves draws on the entire canon of ancient literature, bringing together all the elements of every myth into one epic and unforgettable story. Ideal for the first time reader, it can be read as a single, continuous narrative, while full commentaries, with cross-references, interpretations, variants and explanations, as well as a comprehensive index of names, make it equally valuable as a work of scholarly reference for anyone seeking an authoritative and detailed account of the gods, heroes and extraordinary events that provide the bedrock of Western literature.

The result is a classic among classics, a treasure trove of extraordinary tales and a masterful work of literature in its own right.

About the Author

Robert Graves (1895 - 1985) was a novelist, poet, historian, critic and translator, author of some 140 books, and one of the greatest figures of 20th century British literature. Alongside The Greek Myths, his most famous works include the historical novels I, Claudius and Claudius the God and his First World War memoir Goodbye to All That. His friendship with fellow war poet Siegfried Sassoon was the subject of Pat Barker's novel Regeneration.

I would highly reccommend this book to anyone interested in Classical Mythology; it is comprehensive and is very easy to use. You can use the references to find a specific myth, if you have a particular interest, or read it as an extentended collection of the stories. It contains all of the Greek myths together, and told very well. I would, however, caution academic or literary users, as if you need to know the sources for each myth Graves does not always reference them. For this kind of use, I would reccommend Pierre Grimal's 'Dictionary of Classical Mythology'. The book also contains a map of the Greek world and map showing sites mentioned in the text, helping you visualize and understand the relative geographies of the myths.
I really like this book, and after buying my own copy bought one for a friend. A must for lovers of mythology.

By Roman Clodia TOP 500 REVIEWER

Originally published in 1955, this is an encyclopaedic work that pulls together versions of the Greek myths from the various creation stories (e.g the Pelasgian creation, the Olmpian creation) through the revolts against the gods, the re-peopling of the earth after Deucalion's flood, the Cretan cycle (Theseus and the minotaur), the Theban cycle (Oedipus), the Argos cycle (the house of Atreus), Heracles, Jason and the Argonauts, and the Trojan War.

Each episode is treated separately and Graves intersperses his own interpretations, primarily anthropological.

So this is a great reference source but isn't really a single narrative or told in a particualarly dramatic form. If you're looking for a more fiction-based account of the myths I would recommend Ovid's witty and sometimes outrageous telling in the Metamorphoses translated by David Raeburn.
