Synopsis

Does homosexuality remain the greatest taboo in black culture? This work compiles 28 essays from academics writers of all ethnic heritages, genders, and sexualities, that explore this issue and examine the volatile relationships between black gay men and lesbians and others of their race.

From the Author

" The Greatest Taboo: Homosexuality In Black Communities has won the Lambda Literary Award for best Non Fiction Anthology 2001 at the 14th Annual Lambda event that celebrates excellence in gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender literature.

The winners were announced at a celebrity packed gala event at the Tribeca Rooftop in New York City May, 2002. Margaret Cho was also honoured with the Lambda Literary Foundation's Bridge Builder Award. Performance poet Emanuel Xavier presided as emcee.

" I had no idea that the book was going to be nominated let alone win, but I am glad that it has. I didn't expect to win but at least the book and the contribution of all the authors have been acknowledged and given the recognition they deserve. Without their efforts this book would not have been possible"

In fact it is the contributors and the editors at Alyson that made the book I just helped put things together and get it out there in the public domain" said British born Constantine-Simms.

When asked what other projects he had up his sleeve Constantine-Said " I am currently finishing of The Greatest Taboo Volume Two with Kheven Lagrone: which should finished at the end of the year. This book will be a lot more controversial than the last edition. No publication date has been set for now. I am also in the latter stages of my pet project " Hitler Forgotten Victims: The Black Experience In Nazi Germany. I have already been approached by a well known New York based media organisations who want to use the manuscript for a film"

British Born Constantine-Simms is a freelance journalist currently based in Long Island New York but divides his time equally between the USA and London England .

5.0 out of 5 stars Questions Answered! 18 May 2001
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Does Homosexuality remain the greatest taboo in black culture? Is homosexuality a European cultural imposition on Africans? Are you black first or queer? These are the important questions that Delroy Constantine-Simms, the editior of The Greatest Taboo, sets about to answer by compiling twenty-eight essays from such heralded authors as Bell Hooks, Earl Ofari Hutchinson, Seth Clark Silberman, Gregory Conerly, and Gloria Wekker.

The interesting thing about this collection, other than the fact that it is long overdue, is that it examines homosexuality in both men and women are far back as slavery times. If one is a fan of non-fiction, thought-provoking reading, then The Greatest Taboo is definitely one for the collection. There has long been a stigma surrounding homosexuality, mostly from those who fear something they cannot understand. I think this is an important book for everyone to read and I highly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 of A Kind beats a Straight 14 Jun 2001
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I chose this book because I thought it was a chronicle of stories. Stories of black gay and lesbians, not an analytical outlook on the community. Delroy Constantine-Simms mentions in the introduction that this book was supposed to be an "anthology of Black perspective that was either sympathetic to or antagonistic toward the subject of homosexuality". I wish it was, instead the reader gets several essays that read like textbook stuff.

If you're looking to read thought provoking essays then this is the book to read. You won't, however find comments from those who have a hostile point of view regarding the homosexual community.
