I'm not particularly a fan of "classic" movies, but I do like a good spiritual movie. And this collection has at least two which _cannot_ be missed: "The Greatest Story Ever Told" and "The Song of Bernadette". Second best (from a spiritual point of view) but definitely worth having are The Robe and Francis of Assisi. And I was suprised by how good "The Story of Ruth" was, a film I'd never heard of. Of course "The Agony and The Ecstacy" is just a great great movie, secular or spiritual. Demetrius and the Gladiators is a good follow-up to The Robe. And The Bible is not a boring movie either - in fact some of it (e.g. Sodom and Gomarrah) is great - and the Noah section is actually quite light hearted.

I have no regrets about buying this. I already had the St. Francis film and had seen The Song of Bernadette recently, but it was all still all worth getting. Highly recommended.

I won't comment on the films themselves as you undoubtedly know of them. However, and very pleasingly -

All the films are in their original screen ratios / anamorphic widescreen for 16:9 televisions, except The Song of Bernadette which is 4:3 B/W (which is its original). Seeing these films in 2.55:1 (The Robe, Demetrius & the Gladiators), 2.35:1 (The Bible, Francis of Assissi, The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Story of Ruth), and 2.20:1 (The Agnony & the Ecstacy) is wonderful. It is a pleasure to see a DVD set of this quality. It is a shame there are no accompanying notes however.

On a practical note the case is compact, stylish and ingenious in its design.

I convinced myself that, at less than a pound a film, I couldn't go wrong with this (and I see it has now sold out at that price). I think I was right - just. Some of them are certainly decent films, but I don't know whether I'd have bought them if they weren't part of this 'great value' box set. Others like 'Ruth' are, well - supernaturally dull. I suppose it's a moot point whether Hollywood could ever be capable of making a film with genuine religious feeling, as opposed to just a would-be worthy boreathon.

I believe the moral is: some films are just not worth having, not at any price.

Aside from the films though, what I really admire about this is the package design. Eight disks are cunningly fitted into a pack the size of only 2 ordinary DVD cases - such a contrast with a lot of boxed sets, which flop all over the place and seem to want to take up the maximum room possible. Not quite a miracle (of engineering), but it deserves to be a much-imitated idea.

Lovely set of films, very well crafted and exceptional at the side of today's films which are quickly forgotten.

Disappointed that one of the dvds is faulty, especially as it is a continuation of the story the robe. I couldn't return as I left it 3 months between watching them.
