The Greatest Hit is a hilariously titled compilation containing all but one--"Bouncing Babies" is not included--of the UK singles released during the Teardrop Explodes brief but heroically chaotic existence. Purveying a perverse strain of English psychedelia and an almost suicidal predilection for chemically frazzled lunacy, the Teardrop Explodes were unlikely pop stars. And yet, for a brief, surreal moment in early 1981, lead singer Julian Cope was adopted as a pouting pin-up by the Smash Hits brigade. The reason? UK Top Ten smash "Reward", (it reached number 6), a righteous fanfare of efficacious brass and trampolining bass. Even the re-released follow-up "Treason (It's Just a Story)" grazed the Top 20. Equally poptastic, and their final minor hit, is the swinging 60s pop of the "As Tears Go By"-snaffling "Passionate Friend". From here on, Commander Cope and his cosmic crew set the controls for the heart of the sun, eventually imploding in truly spectacular style. The end came soon after, in an acid-fried incident involving a brick fight, shotgun and a bucket of cow dung. Bless their cotton socks. --Chris King

Always were one of my favourite bands and listening to this has reminded me why they always will be. A truly top draw collection of the best tracks taken from the bands short but sweet existance.
This really carries a great track listing without a dud or filler amongst it. From the pure pop genius of Reward, Treason and Passionate Friend to the gentle and emotional Tiny Children, The Great Domimions and Suffocate the quality is there to see (or rather to hear they never did make a good video). Even the more obscure tracks like Christ versus Warhol (b-side to Passionate Friend) stand the test of time.
All in all a stunning representation of one of the most underated bands of all time. Go on buy it you know it makes sense.

Saw the Teardrop Explodes in concert in 1981 and it has remained one of the best experiences of my teenage years!!
Passionate Friend is my all time favourite but each track is unique and as good today as it was 'way back then'!

It's a shame that The Teardrop Explodes didn't achieve more commercial success. This collection sounds as fresh and energetic today as when the songs were originally recorded.
