Brian's first album is full of superb guitar picking, heartfelt lyrics and brilliant harmony. Generally stripped back, acoustic intruments with an Irish influence (the instruments, not the music). One for the late evening, you are drawn into his world of intense feelings of hope, fragility and the human experience of living in relation to fellow man. And the music- carefully constructed, musical ability of the highest order, topped off by Brian's soaring voice. Often singing in falsetto, nevertheless a deeply felt performance. Forget 'A better man', released some years after this, which conceded far too much to the big label sound, 'The great war of words' is one of those hidden gems from before commercial pressure bit too hard. For many it will be one of those CD's they are unsure of on first listening, but let it grow; it has remained one of my most favoured albums for the last 13 years. Great standard recording too.

Proof that compilation albums are worth buying is the fact that I ended up hearing this album thanks to a track on a Celtic compilation. The track stood out and I had to get the album in part to learn more about a then unknown artists.

That was years ago, before Kennedy achieved the level of fame he has, but even for fans of his newer work I think this album has a strong appeal. His voice is amazing, the music haunting and moving.

I’ll concede it probably works best when in a melancholy mood, but then if being miserable can have such a beautiful soundtrack it’s almost worth failing out with the wife for.

The Great War of Words was Brian Kennedy's first album and for anyone who knows 'Captured' or 'Town' this is where those great songs came from. This CD has 12 tracks, varied in style, tempo and inspiration, but all equally blessed with the beauty of Brian Kennedy's voice. He has been described as sounding like an angel on heat, and one listen to this CD will tell you why that is so true. The songs on this CD speak directly to many people's experiences, Kennedy is not afraid to sing/speak from the heart. Some of the songs, notably 'Town', stem from his experience of growing up on Belfast's Falls Road and are particularly moving for anyone with direct knowledge of Northern Ireland. However, that is not to say these songs are only accessible to the Irish, no-one could be failed to be moved by the heartfelt passion in these songs and the achingly beautiful voice of the man who wrote and sings them, Belfast's Brian Kennedy
