Review

"Deeply moving, fascinating and powerful." (Sunday Mirror)

"A handful of people dominate this wonderful book. They are not special or famous but their stories will haunt you for a very long time... Charman's great achievement is to let the people who lived through all this speak for themselves. You will be torn between admiration, pity and anger." (The Herald)

"This tome lets those who lived through these terrible times tell you how it really was in their own words. From the gung-ho to the fearful, the petty to the practical, the sorrows and the shocks, the pitiful, the heroic, the angry… they put it all down on paper in a way that lets you gauge whether you could have lived through the terror – and be in awe of those who did." (Sunday Sport)

"This is a deeply sobering, essential read." (Bookbag)

WE'VE got TV and the Net to swamp us with World War I commemorations these days - competing creative output to fill any blanks in our brains about the conflagration.

Obviously, 100 years ago it would fill people's lives, too, but it wouldn't require some camp producer's input to supplement their emotions. Their records were more personal and intimate, delivered through letters home and to the front, in which they kept a human contact amid all the inhumanity around them, and diaries, in which they recorded the effect of the war on their daily lives and their hopes and fears.

Where other books on the subject of the conflict will tell you what went on in great detail, this tome lets those who lived through those terrible times tell you how it really was in their own words. From the gung-ho to the fearful, the petty to the practical, the sorrows and the shocks, the pitiful, the heroic, the angry.

As the war drags on, death changes people's lives, and they put it all down on paper in a way that lets you gauge whether you could have lived through the terror - and be in awe of those who did.

This is a wonderful book. I did not see the TV programme on the same topic, but reading this book brought the whole era of the First World War to life for me in a way no other reading I have done before has ever done. By using the very touching letters and diary entries of ordinary people who lived through those extremely difficult times, it brings their hardships and experiences to life. The skill of Isobel Charman in weaving into this extremely well researched book the ongoing historical facts of the progress of the war is incredible. The book is so readable and informative and deeply moving - you get engrossed in the lives of the people whose life stories unfold as you read. I now stop at war memorials in English villages and look at the names on the stones with deep feelings of sympathy & sadness & an almost "knowing" their stories in a way not open to me before reading this wonderful book.

I saw the television series aired last year and enjoyed it- so was glad when I found this book on Amazon. It is a fascinating and informative book which chronicles the war through the eyes of a group people who were either in the army or coping with
life on the home front. Their stories are told through diaries and letters and you learn how they lived (and died) through those historical years. It has been beautifully researched and is an excellent book to read as it guides you through the whole of the Great War from start to finish.

I got this book after seeing the TV series. It beautifully compliments it. The stories are very moving. I tend to read serious histories by authors like Liddell-Hart. This provides a good contrast with the cold military and political histories.
