A book which collects all the major exhibits from the National portrait galleries 2014 show commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War. By seeing the faces and reading their stories one can sometimes get an unexpected insight into that major, all defining conflict of the twentieth century.
The book has high quality reproductions of the portraits and is reasonably priced.

I visited this exhibition in the National Portrait Gallery on two occasions and was moved by the effect which these paintings had on me. Many of those viewing the items were close to tears such was the profound sadness of the content. Nothing is held back and there are disturbing portraits of facial gun shot wounds but this should not put readers off as it documented the start of the process of showing to the public the realities of war on an industrial scale. Buy this book especially at the bargain price offered. The portraits of the war leaders are magnificent.

Great photographs and illustrations, easy to read, and really informative. A perfect companion to the exhibition at the Portrait Gallery

Reading About The War is One Thing, This Book Puts A Whole New Perspective On The Carnage 8 May 2014

For those of us who can't go to London, this catalog of portraits and some images ties much of the literature written about the war with those issuing and carrying out the orders. Particularly stark are the reconstructive surgery images. Anyone serious about further understanding the personalities of war, should purchase a book like this.
Only wish it was more readily available through traditional sellers.
