The tangled tale of the Hon Charlie's facial hair, the murder of the first lady don at his Oxford college, and... well, a lot of other rather nasty surprises. Bon left this novel unfinished at the time of his death and the penultimate (and perhaps slightly OTT) chapter was contributed by Craig Brown.

Contains everything that the original Mortdecai Trilogy has - not quite as dark as "Something Nasty In The Woodshed" and not quite as freewheeling as "Don't Point That Thing At Me" and "After You With The Pistol" but still very readable, very funny and very, very good.

After the trilogy, if you fancy just a dash more of our favourite portly criminal bon viveur (! ) then thankfully the Hon.Charlie Mortdecai is back in this slim tome, this time employed as a sleuth to hunt down a murderer, whilst determinedly (and energetically) fostering a nascent moustache. Full of important advice and as many synonyms and sobriquets for moustache as one could wish for. The language still tickles and entertains, and the tale is still as convoluted, odd and unlikely as ever. The snail is upon the thorn, and the brandy and soda (sans soda) is within easy reach! Cheers.

a dead man's shoes 10 Dec 2003
By F. C. Lloyd - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
It can't be easy stepping into a dead man's shoes - and judging Craig Brown is pointless - at least we do have another CVCM novel.

Sections of the book are on a par with Something Nasty (especially the interview with the Dominicans) ... others clearly aren't, including, sadly, the ending. This leads me to suggest that this is one for the fans - Bonfiglioli's past glories are enough to keep you going to the end.

Perhaps it's as well Mr Brown wasn't able to tie up all the loose ends, thus leaving us with the luxury of being able to use our imaginations to decide what Bonfiglioli had planned for them and Charlie.

Shaven back into ecology. 25 Sep 2011

Format:Paperback
This book is incomplete and Craig Brown does an unsatisfying job of tying all the loose ends together in order to get Kyril Bonfiglioli's unfinished manuscript to publication. That said, The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery in absolutely no way suffers from the shortcomings of the last chapter (courtesy of Mr. Brown). It is extremely pleasurable to read and represents Bonfigilioli's best and least restrained work. Absolutely a must read for any fan of his limited catalogue.
