This maybe a good choice for some but it didn't hold me spellbound as some poetry can. Where there some missing? Possibly, and I didn't totally enjoy the choice of poems, interesting but there are other anthologies and collections that I've enjoyed more. The write ups on each poet were a good addition.

This book does 4 things. It gives you a great selection of modern poetry. It introduces you to the poets with short, well written biogs. It lets you hear them through the enclosed CD. And it gives you the satisfaction of handling a beautifully published book with satisfying modern typography. An all-round great experience for sitting peacefully and reading then listening. A reminder of what the digital age may leave behind.

This is the perfect gift for anyone who loves poetry.

It is the perfect book to buy for yourself if you like Poetry :)

In it you will find ~
50 of the most important (English language) Poets
150 of their poems, an average of 3 per poet
A brief bio, and a conversation about the value/role of their poetry
A fine black and White photograph of each poet, something of a work of art in itself

This is a reference I think I will find myself turning to regularly; for all the reasons listed above.

An excellent anthology including all the names one would expect, Larkin, Hughes,Plath, Dylan Thomas et al , and other interesting choices not so familiar ( not to me at any rate!). Poetry tends to be a very personal taste and this is one man's choice although Michael Schmidt is a professor of poetry and provides ( brief) insightful and accessible personal and professional observations and judgements along with each of his 50 choices. Features 150 richly varied poems.Recommended.

An incredible introduction to some of the greatest English-speaking poets of the 20th century along with some of their poems (sometimes very representative, some others not so much). The authors of this collection have worked hard to bring you a page's worth of information about each poet, their life and their work, and a few of their poems, and it's a really really good book in its total.

I was, however, a bit turned down by the fact that poets such as John Burnside were not included in the book, but hey, you can't ask for everything, can you? :)
