Ok, it would be very easy for me sit down and write a very biased review of this album, BTBAM being my favourite band for quite some time now they could probably do no wrong in my eyes but facts being facts this is a stunning, tour de force of a progressive metal album.
The band have come on leaps and bounds in maturing their sound since their self-titled debut, honing their song-writing abilities into something quite astonishing and The Great Misdirect is their finest example of this, as ever they contrast heavy/soft sections of music arguably better than anyone else in progressive metal, the music twists and turns through heavy grind-core-like passages, clean Pink Floyd-esque bridges, honky tonk piano intros and nu-age breakdowns whilst astoundingly retaining a fantastic fluidity which brings everything together rather than causing the album to sound like 200 songs crammed into 6.
Another highlight of the album is of course the superb musicianship on show, and with all the talent on offer here it would have been more than easy to allow this album to slip into a self-indulgent shred-fest. BTBAM though, in usual style, use their abilities to add to the music and to enhance the listeners experience rather than detract from it and even with plenty of lead guitar and blindingly technical rhythmical passages it never feels like a case of "I am awesome, watch how fast I can play".
Although being a progression of the sound that they truly mastered on 'Colors' I couldn't, no matter how many times I've listened to this so far, find a favourite song. 'Color's' gave me a firm favourite in 'White Walls' but The Great Misdirect has provided me with the highlight being the whole album, it just blends together so well that, in a sense, it's a similar experience to watching a great movie. You'll just want to start at the beginning and listen until you are at the end. And that, in my opinion, is the best thing an album could be.
So here it is. An intense, passionate album for anyone who loves prog/metal or is just generally open minded to creative, intelligent, powerful music.
Enjoy.
