This book is the only book you should buy if new to mahjong. I bought several others....all confusing. This book has absolutely beautiful colour pictures of tiles, superbly presented, clear to read, to re-refer to. It has fascinating background information. It clearly explains all salient points. It describes variations in America,Japan,China,UK,Holland,France,Germany and Italy in interesting clear ways, you can just enjoy reading. The two greatest assets are the Appendix 'quick mahjong reference' and Handy doubling table for basic mahjong. All in all an absolute pleasure. If you are new to Mahjong, interested to find out relevant history this is the ONLY book to buy!!!!

A note to the publishers, You must use 'Search inside' facility on Amazon, this book is beautiful and clear and would fly off the shelves if prospective purchasers could look inside!!!!

Since I started playing mahjong almost 20 years ago I have used 2 books - 'A Mah Jong Handbook' by Eleanor Noss Whitney and 'The Complete Book of Mah-Jongg' by A D Millington - as my reference bibles for mahjong. These have, for many years, been the only comprehensively digestible books on the subject worth possessing (with possibly the little Know the Game book by Headley and Seeley as an easy reference for the British game).
This, however, has now changed with the appearance in English of 'The Great Mahjong Book' by Jelte Rep. I would recommend this unreservedly to any serious mahjong player. It reviews mahjong as it is played in 8 countries and includes a brief section on the 'new' (1998) official Chinese International Rules as published by the World Mahjong Organisation (WMO). In addition it is written in a lively, interesting manner containing many entertaining anecdotes and snippets of unusual information and is beautifully and colourfully illustrated.
This has now joined my ever-growing library of books on mahjong and will take pride of place as one of 4 books which I shall be recommending to my current group of mahjong players in the North Norfolk U3A!

After playing Mah Jong with friends from Hong Kong, my husband and I bought ourselves a set - with impenetrable instructions obviously translated using a computer translation tool rather than a human brain! Having read other reviews of this book, I decided that it would be just the job - and I wasn't wrong.

The playing instructions are clear and easy to follow. We're still learning the basics, but there are lots of opportunities to dip into more complex rules and games as your skill level improves.

The book also offers a really fascinating history of the game, and is a good read as well as an excellent instruction manual.

We've now had lots of visitors who we've played Mah Jong with - with the book close by! I think Amazon have sold a few more copies as people have found themselves hooked!

Don't be put off by the garish front cover - this is probably the best book you can get. I've played mah jong for 40 years and have become interested in the differing country variants; this book provides that, plus the history and ancestry of the game, including anecdotes of the pioneers like Babcock and Harr.
Written in an easily understood style and profusely illustrated, I find it much more 'friendly' than Whitney's 'Mah Jong Handbook'; the highlighting draws one's eye to the important stuff, while the yellow pages provide diverting and interesting facts and quotes.
The detailed first chapter explains the allure and seduction of the sets, the meaning of the characters, the accessories, buying a set and the ancient art of making the tiles. Chapter 2 details the basic rules, while the following chapters elaborate on the variations played in different countries.
A welcome addition to any newcomer or enthusiast's library.

This book provides a very comprehensive look at that wonderful old Chinese board game. It is well illustated. Jelte Rep begins by taking you through the various pieces which comprise a mahjong set. Then he explains the rules of the basic game. ie the fundamental principles, which are common to all forms of mahjong. He then takes you through many national variants of the game. This is fascinating in itself! Finally, he tells you what to do if you want to play for a non-standard number of players. ie normally there are four players, but what if there are five of you? Or three, or even two? Jelte Rep has a good, clear, way of explaining this fascinating game. I bought this book before buying a mahjong set, and am glad I did--it meant I didn't have to rely on the directions that came with the set, which were awful! So be prepared, and read up on the game first.

I'm only starting with mahjong - and this book turned out to be decent overview of different play styles. It contains large batch of history, general rules and a listing of different types of mahjong variations - Chinese old style & official, American, Japanese (traditional & riichi) , HongKong, UK, plus few more. It could use some more descriptions of tactics, but I think it's great for beginners as myself. Plus, it talks very shortly about 2, 3 and 5 people versions, which could be very useful, if you don't have so many people to play with.
