This book, although not overlong, clearly explains exactly what 'macrobiotic' means. As with many others, I have long had a vague awareness of this term but haven't known exactly what it entailed, and what benefits it can bring.

The author explains not only the kinds of foods, but the whole 'lifestyle' which goes to make up the macrobiotic way of life (it can't really be called a diet as such). Most interesting, and it certainly seems worth the effort - and let's face it, it is a big change for most - to try this. Yes, it will be difficult to completely change one's way of eating, but Waxman explains how to adapt slowly by adding new foods gradually. I'm definitely going to try these changes.

HASH(0x8ef46510) out of 5 stars Simple and to the point 31 Aug. 2009
By Lena - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I have struggled to "understand" the very difficult concept of MACROBIOTIC WAY for a very long time. I have read a lot of macrobiotic books and only recently started attending cooking classes and actually learning the reason behind each step in cooking process. I was concentrating all of my attention on FOOD..So I would eat the very best macrobiotic food but I did not understand the concept or reason behind the macrobiotic format. This book is truly THE BEST MACROBIOTIC book out there. It's straightforward, concise, and makes a lot of sense. Denny Waxman really explains the idea behind FOOD and FORMAT in a simple way. It's a book for everyone to really understand the way to true health through simple lifestyle changes. It's a lifestyle/health bible.

HASH(0x8f2aee40) out of 5 stars Concise book about getting started with a new lifestyle 23 Aug. 2007
By Henry Florsheim - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
My wife and I went to Denny Waxman for macrobiotic counseling on the recommendation of a friend, as my wife was diagnosed with cancer. We were very impressed with his recommendations for her specific health issues, and we have seen immediate results.

Denny's book, "The Great Life Diet," is wonderful in explaining concisely and accessibly how macrobiotics works and about the lifestyle changes involved. The best thing is that Denny highlights each chapter at the end, an extremely helpful technique.

This book should be read by everyone, even those not interested in macrobiotics, for its enlightening focus on healthy living.

HASH(0x8fda67f8) out of 5 stars The Best Introduction to Macrobiotics and Living as Designed 7 July 2007
By John Granger - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Denny Waxman's *The Great Life Diet* has the virtues of simplicity, brevity, clarity, and practicality. He writes in an engaging, calm voice that radiates the common sense and flexibility his decades of experience have given his recommendations. This is anything but an invitation to an ascetic Japanese food cult. Rather than austerity, Mr. Waxman lays out a way of eating as we are designed for greater health that you can create empirically from your experience rather than rigidly from locked-on ideology. His success in helping people reverse "terminal" illnesses using diet and life-style is no surprise after reading this book which supplants Carolyn Heidenry's *Introduction to Macrobiotics* as the best one-stop reference for living and eating according to traditional principle and human design. I recommend it without reservation.

HASH(0x8f5d7b1c) out of 5 stars Most Important Book of the 21st Century 19 Sept. 2008
By D. Kagan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Of all the books I've read in the past decade, none can have such an impact. Perhaps that's why I've not only ordered 25 copies for friends and family, but also suggested this could be the basis for lectures at schools and civic leagues.

Denny Waxman is not only smart, but he's done a great job making his message simple--do the things that will make your body stronger and reduce its stress, and you will enjoy better health--including higher productivity, better looks, lower healthcare bills, even better sex!!

Sad to say, many people don't know how to take care of themselves, and many others are unwilling to do the work. But, life is there for the taking. And a great life is here when you read this book.

Thanks for reading!

HASH(0x8f2a74ec) out of 5 stars A great book 11 Feb. 2012
By HJH - Published on Amazon.com

I was diagnosed with a very dangerous type of cancer almost four years ago. It had spread and the biopsy showed it to be highly agressive. I learned that I had about a 10% chance of surviving 5 years. Today, I am cancer free; I frequently work 14-16 hours a day at a job that I love, with little feeling of lethargy; and I look and feel younger than I did ten years ago. I credit Denny Waxman's macrobiotic program, which he outlines in this book in a very clear and understandable way. This book is engaging and easy-to-read, and you'll find that you can read it cover to cover in an evening. I recommend that you do.
