Review

'This is unquestionably the most comprehensive single account of the Irish catastrophe...' Professor Peter Gray, Queen's University, Belfast ' ... many historians have written excellent books about the great Irish famine ... Donnelly's is the best and most comprehensive of them all.' Kerby Miller, Middlebush Professor of History, University of Missouri, Columbia 'James Donnelly's book is likely to become the classic account of the Great Famine, and the first port of call for both students and general readers.' Professor Peter Gray, Queen's University, Belfast

Product Description

This is an account of the Great Irish Potato Famine of the late 1840s, a famine which resulted in the death of about one million people and was also largely responsible, in conjunction with British government policies, for one of the great international human migrations of British history - the mass exodus of some two million people from Ireland, mostly to North America, in the years 1845 - 55. This book combines narrative, analysis, historiography and scores of contemporary illustrations. It aims to provide an insight into the misery of the famine and the nightmare of mass evictions that followed.

While studying for my A-Levels I had the opportunity to pick and research my own project. I picked the Irish Potato Famine because no one in my class had ever heard of it. I didn't really know much about it myself but I found this Book in a local bookstore and found that it explains things in a way that is easy to understand and yet extremly informative. It outlines the most important facts and speaks generally about others, it lists facts and figures as well as the names and dates of important people and events. It also refers to other good books on the subject and it made me really think about this black period in Irish history. I went on to get an A for my reseach Project and i am now studying Irish History in University and once again I find myself turning to this book for information. This really is a must have book for anyone interested in or studying the Irish Potato Famine.

They say, 'history is written with the bias of the historian', so where do you start in this very emotive and painful subject? In the opening chapters James Donnelly explains the different interpretations of this tragic event by Nationalist, Revisionist and British historians, indeed he also ends with it. So from the off, you know you're in for a difficult time. He quotes many anti-British writers and apologists who give a damming verdict against the British Government under both Peel and Russell. Included in the anti-British accounts are, The Great Hunger: Ireland 1845 1849, (Cecil Woodham-Smith) and The Last Conquest of Ireland, (John Mitchel) vs Revistionist (favourable to the British and protestant views - although debatable?), are Moody, Edwards and The Great Famine: Studies in Irish History, 1845-1852, (Edwards & Williams). So you see the difficulty - I read this as a introduction into a period in history in which my great-grandparents suffered along with the one million who died through starvation and disease and the 2.1 million evicted, exploited and dispersed. He covers all the salient points with statistics, charts and illustrations. The infamous 'Phytophthora infestans', 'Grosse Īle, 'the coffin ships', and 'Skibbereen' are also covered. I think it's advisable to have a wider understanding of Irish History before reading this book as some of the people and events he refers to aren't given an introduction in the book. This may be of some help, The Story of Ireland [DVD]. Finally, is this a balanced account? I think it's a good place to start.
