5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By J. M. Green VINE VOICE on 21 Sept. 2011
Format: Audio CD
I purchased this album on vinyl back in the mid 70's and it took quite a bit of searching out because neither LW or Mountain were that big in the UK at the time (even though some of the song, Nantucket Sleighride, was heard week in and week out as the theme music to "Weekend World" - not that many politically motivated viewers would care a hoot as to who had produced the theme music!) Anyway, I digress.
This album is a follow on to LW's original 1969 solo effort "MOUNTAIN" and although carrying a lot more in the way of covers, (remember, this is Leslie West, we are talking about here - he of the growling vocals and heavyweight guitar chords - therefore covers are NOT "covered" in quite the same way as lesser musicians would record!), and it really is a little gem.
The opener, "Don't Burn Me" sets the standard and is a truly understated but powerful number with LW pressing the point well and truly home and runs neatly into "House Of The Rising Sun" (being the first of several recorded versions that LW was to make over his long career) and is belted out in his own inimitable way - the Animals version seeming very, very tame by comparison!
High Roller ( with a certain Mr M Jagger on guitar) follows along with "If I Were A Carpenter" (sung as a threat - believe you me!), a rocking version of the Stones' Honky Tonk Women and a more than passable version of Free's "Little Bit Of Love" all adding up to a very entertaining package indeed - the only gripe being that the album is way too short...but, remember, this is from the mid 70's and vinyl was capable of a maximum 20 minutes a side....!
So if you like LW, Mountain or just damned fine 70's rock music - GET THIS - and crank it up...you will not be disappointed!!

I came late to know of the prowess of Leslie West long after he was famously fronting the group called Mountain. He is a guitar player of sizeable talent. When I saw him first it was in a televised concert of no less nine guitar giants. He played a piece he obviously included in most of his stage presentations called 'Theme for an imaginery Western' and dedicated it to a late friend before playing it. The piece is beautiful, but unfortunately does not feature on this CD; but can saught by those discerning guitar buffs. The concert was called 'The Night of the Guitars'.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this CD or indeed any others Leslie West is part of.

A poor record that does not truly reflect the brilliance of Leslie West. Totally disappointed with this purchase. For collectors who want his full catalogue only

NOT RE-MASTERED 3 Oct. 2009
By MUSICFANATIC - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This is the second time I bought this album on cd. I've got other albums on the Voiceprint label and they're all mastered well so I bought this disc thinking that since it's on a different label and released in 2009 that it was upgraded from the one on the TRC label. Well it's not. They must have lost the master tapes of this recording because the sound quality really sucks. It sounds like the music was lifted off a poor quality cassette tape. The frequencies are so dull it sounds like I've got pillows in front of my speakers. I guess I'm gonna have to burn my old vinyl to disc because even with all the pops and crackles it sounds a whole lot better than this disc. Too bad 'cause this is a really good album by Leslie.

The Great Fatsby 12 Dec. 2010

A great album. There are 2 remarkable songs: "House of the Rising Sun" and "If I Were a Carpenter" and Leslie made them worth to listen. He not just plays them, he gave them his personality as with his vocal and really touching guitar solo on the "House...
Both songs with the help of Dana Valery on vocal, they sound so good it might stay in your head, and you want to listen them over and over.

(Amazon Verified Purchase)I have been a Leslie West fan since 1970,Mountain, West,Bruce&Laing, and his solo cds.The Great Fatsby has a good remake of Honkey Tonk Women and Mick Jagger playing guitar, also a good version of If I were a carpenter. The House of The Rising Sun is good on this album, but much better on the 2005 Got Blooze cd.I already had the Great Fatsby on Lp when I ordered it.Amazon had a three cd package of Blues To Die For,Got Blooze and Blue Me.This was a good purchase. Leslie West has always had a tinge of blues to his music. These cds are well worth it.Back to good ole rock-n-roll.His latest cd Unusual Suspects is very good. With a great guest list on it.If you are already a Leslie West fan you will not be disappointed,if not this is a good cd to get started on.

If you are a Mountain or Leslie West fan this is a great album. If you don't like Leslie West's music I can't help you. I have most of his stuff and probably will end up buying all of his work beforeI am done.
