'A monumental tome that's a genuine contribution to modern thinking about the nature of exploration ... the essays are first class ... nigh-on perfect'
--Bookdealer

'Exceptional ... superb illustrations add a revealing dimension to the literary narrative' --Christopher Ondaatje, Country Life

'Beautifully illustrated' --Geographical Reviews

'The emphasis is on adventure and on historical context: this collection really is beautifully illustrated but, no coffee-table book, it's written to be read'
--The Scotsman

'A feast ... informative but not tedious ... a delight to dip into' --Shetland Times

'An intelligent quest into uncharted worlds'
--The Oxford Times

`[This book] is the type you curl up with ... a glorious [...] nostalgia-fest ... absorbing, factually tight, sensitive to its Eurocentricity, it gathers together a host of valuable essays'

Exquisite 25 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book is a must for lovers of natural history, exploration and science. It is extremely well produced with the most beautiful botanical drawings, maps, and portraiture. The colour printing used to reproduce the pictures is fabulous.
The book looks at the main explorers and gives each of them approx 2 - 5 pages each. There are chapters at the beginning that discuss oceans and maps etc. So its up to you to "explore" further yourself. There is a fabulous "further reading" section at the back. Ideal as a family reference book and probably better in hardback as it suits the style of the content.
It is quite an ambitious book in the content it is trying to cover but I think it does well to give a synopsis of some fabulous characters from history. Hence the 4 stars. It leads up to present day. I think the few modern pictures at the end ruin the romantic feel of the book. Kick's one back to reality.
If I received this as a gift I would clap with delight.

The book is hardback approx 24 x 18 cm's and 3 cm's thick. It has 204 illustrations.

"The Great Explorers" provides an inspiring introduction to the lives of a selection of explorers, some of whom will be far from well known. The brief biographies range across time and location whetting the apetite to find out more about the cast of characters; helpfully assisted by a further reading guide.

Produced in hardback on thick quality paper the books combination of text and period illustrations makes it a joy to read. Without a doubt this was my find of the year; a book I'll return to time and time again.

A good read! 15 Feb 2012
By Sandra
Format:Hardcover
This is an ideal book for dipping into. The writers are varied and make their subjects interesting but one feels aware that they have been given a specific number of words to write. A little flexibility would be preferable. Not a big glossy coffee table book but a comfortable size with good illustrations.I recommend it.
