Product Description

The New Cat keeps bringing dead things into the house as presents for Tom. When he brings in the head of the vicar's very expensive Koi Carp and the Vicar makes Mum pay GBP200 for a replacement, Anna's Dad is so cross he locks the New Cat out of the cat-flap. Tom argues for the Cat to be let back in, but the flap is left shut overnight and when Dad finally concedes, the New Cat has disappeared altogether. Anna, Suzanne and Tom are convinced he has been kidnapped - but who is responsible? A new investigation begins...

My eight year old son and I have really enjoyed reading some of Katie Davies' other stories, so were delighted to discover this one. The Great Cat Conspiracy features Anna and her brother Tom again which is great as they are such brilliant characters. Despite being part of a series, though, this story works perfectly well as a standalone book as it is a complete story in itself.

As the title might suggest, this tale surrounds the mystery of Anna's missing cat and the children's determination to find him, even if it means visiting the slightly creepy 'Cat Lady.' The story is really engaging, with the mystery element reminding me of an up-to-date Enid Blyton adventure story. These children are a little bit cheekier though and the story is far, far funnier than anything Enid Blyton ever wrote!

I particularly like how the tale is recounted in Anna's voice and it reads exactly as a seven year old would describe each event, right down to repeating word-for-word what her parents say, however inappropriate. It is a really fun style of writing and kept both mine and my son's interest throughout. I even found myself literally laughing out loud at several points! I did wonder whether having a female lead character might put my son off the story but the younger brother keeps the book open to both sexes. Anna is quite an adventurous tomboy style character anyway, so the story appeals just as much to boys and girls.

The language used makes it suitable for a confident young reader to tackle independently but, to be honest, I wouldn't want to deprive any parents of the opportunity to read this story to their children! I think I actually enjoyed it even more than my son did and he totally loved it!

If you've enjoyed any other Katie Davies novels, I think you'll find this the best so far. If you haven't, then I strongly recommend starting with this one. It can be really difficult to find genuinely entertaining stories for the six to ten year old age group but I think this book is the best I've found to date. I'm just looking forward to her next story!
