Biography

Rock's longest, strangest trip, the Grateful Dead were the psychedelic era's most beloved musical ambassadors as well as its most enduring survivors, spreading their message of peace, love, and mind-expansion across the globe throughout the better part of three decades. The object of adoration for popular music's most fervent and celebrated fan following -- the Deadheads, their ... Read more in Amazon's Grateful Dead Store

Look at the numner of cd's in this package. Yes......5 for £19.99. I know some of you may be put off after listening to that foul deed known as Steal Your Face, but rest your fears. This has some of the best live 'official' Dead music available. Just listen to the jamming during Playing In The Band which runs for 32 mins and you get a great Dark Star. Other standouts include Weather Report and Morning Dew.
Every CD in this set is worth your time an money. So what are you waiting for. 'Let there be songs, to fill the air'.

Recorded in 1974 at the Winterland, this CD box contains some of the best recorded and mixed performances of the band in their heyday that you will ever hear.

As has been mentioned already, this is the bargain of the century for Deadheads, 5 CDs of live music that is sheer perfection.

When I first got this box, I sat and played the whole thing through and then wanted to play it all through again immediately afterwards. It really is that good.

Elsewhere, in another review, I express the opinion that Brent Mydland might have been the best keyboard player the Dead ever had, I still think that is possibly correct but the band overall were at their peak in the period leading up to their extended gap year that followed after this tour ended.

Jerry hadn't descended into the heroin hell that blighted the rest of his life and Phil hadn't succumbed to the alcoholism and cocaine abuse that took him to the edge later on. The band were playing with an almost telepathic ability to mesh, to explore the sound and to take the music into new places.

There are moments on each of the CDs in this set that are skin tinglingly amazing, this is the Dead as we should all remember them. There is joy in this music, joy and awe, it is what the Dead were all about and I listen to this box probably far too frequently, compared to their other live albums. That isn't to say I don't listen to the others, I do, I listen to the Dead a lot of the time, I just like spending my time with this music.

This is simply six hours of The Dead in concert, at the height of their powers, recorded with the best sound recording equipment of its day at The Dead's spiritual home (San Francisco's Winterland) and then remastered to the highest standards of OUR day.

If you're new to the band, you can hardly do better than starting here. Those looking for purer evidence of the psychedelic monster of the 1960s will probably already have "Live/Dead", but that album misses out on material from the later, Americana albums: Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. This is a more balanced album in terms of material but, unlike some live documents of the later seventies and eighties, retains the focus on improvisation that make live recordings by this band so highly valued.

While this will never be regarded as the greatest live album ever recorded by the Dead - other, earlier releases have that claim already staked - it's as good as most of them and longer by far. At the price, it's a real bargain, whether or not you ever see the film with which it shares a title.

If you are trawling around trying to decide which of the zillions of Dead albums are must-haves, you can't go better than this gem.

Conventional wisdom has it that 74 was the end of a peak period for the band.. a time when Garcia was slim and relatively drug-free, the band had a massive sound system (I saw it in action in 74 at Alexandria Palace)... but when also the whole Dead machinery was winding down for a hiatus. At the time we did not really know if they were going to tour again, and that pervasive sense of uncertainty lends this whole affair a real sweetness.

Steal yr Face was the abysmal, flat, double album that eventually surfaced from the final pre-hiatus week of concerts, and culled from the same shows as this fantastic package. But what a difference!

Here you have absolutely stellar versions of Dark Star, Playin in the Band (twice) which are stuffed full of the rich musical interplay that the band never quite captured again in its next incarnation. The tone is loose, jazzy, and gentle. The band by this time was wonderfully adept at picking up little musical ideas and collectively running with them, and Dark Star, plus the jam that precedes it, is a good example of all the unexpected side alleys the Dead's jams could run into. It really is collective improv at its best, not simply Garcia plus backing musicians. The sound, too, is crystal clear and the whole selection is brimming with little moments of absolute beauty - Weir especially is at the top of his game.

But for me the real beauty of this collection is the extra sparkle and - yes, that word again - gentleness to some of the hoary classics of the Dead's ouevre.

In October 1974, the Grateful Dead played for five nights at the Winterland in San Francisco by way of a temporary farewell, filming the shows for a film that they hoped would serve as a substitute until they resumed touring, but which didn't appear until 1977, by which time they were back on the road.

Meanwhile, selections from the concerts had appeared on the double-album set Steal Your Face. Generally regarded as the Dead's poorest live album, both in the song selection and the sound mix by Bear and Phil Lesh, it came to be known as Steal Your Money. It's not an album I have heard, but I do know that none of its detractors level the same criticisms at this magnificent 5CD set, culled from the same shows. It is the CD equivalent of the film but with much added, even more than the extended 300-minute DVD set that came out in 2004. There is little overlap with Steal Your Face: four songs appear on both (Ship Of Fools, Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo, US Blues, Stella Blues) but only Ship Of Fools comes from the same night. As the sound has been radically upgraded by Jeffrey Norman for this set, it would be interesting to compare with the earlier master.

At the time of these gigs Mickey was on a gap year (but guests on the final night) and Keith and Donna were fully paid-up members alongside Jerry, Phil, Bob and Bill. The recording dates are given and show that each disc favours one night in date order, but can contain performances drawn from any night between 16th-20th. For example CD1 contains tracks from every night except 20th but features a full half-hour segment of Playing In The Band from the opening night, whereas CD5 is entirely drawn from the final night.
