This is the second book to feature D C I Marc Craig and his team, the first being A Limited Justice.

It begins with a dead body left at the seat of the Irish Parliament, Stormont. The victim is the wife of a Belfast politician and we are led into a trail of fraud, deceit and general nastiness.

As before, the author paints the characters really well, the good guys are good, the bad guys are really despicable but where she really excels is the people in the middle, the 'do-ers' A good part of the latter end of the book deals with the why of the actions of the criminals and when the reasons are revealed it's really heart-ripping stuff.

Also, the interactions between the team members at C C U are as sharp as in the previous book. You get the feeling that these could be real people and I know I will want to be spending more time with them in the future - this is a series that could run and run.

(And one particular interaction actually had me punching the air in happiness for the characters but I won't say who - that'd spoil the fun for you.)

With A Limited Justice, Cat King was the 'new kid on the block', now, with The Grass Tattoo she's proved she can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best.

People can be so evil and heartless. This brutal book, the second in the DCI Craig series, gives glimpses of the underworld fed by exhorbitant greed, which stretches its tentacles from eastern Europe through London, into the green hills of Northern Ireland.
The evil challenges the detective and his team to the limits, as their characters are further revealed through the banter, and their personal stories progress.
King manages the several strings of this plot with consummate skill, leaving the reader wondering how it's going to end, down to the final chapter.
I'm looking forward to the next one.

Catriona King is fast becoming my new favourite author. I read the first book (A Limited Justice) and found it great so a while later I downloaded this one and it is so good I've already started The Visitor. This book deals with, initially, the death of a politician's wife but it roams widely to financial shenanigans and war crimes in Serbia in a most natural way (don't ask - I'd have to give the plot away). The characterisation is superb. Marc and his team are very well drawn and likeable and their tension relieving banter is funny and realistic to the extent that it feels based on real characters. The plot also has a realistic feel - it could happen and probably has as greed can be extremely unreasonable. If I have one criticism I would have loved one of those post novel synopses which tell you what happened to the characters. I was so involved I really want the arch baddy to get life without parole but I don't know if it happened.
I highly recommend this series.

I really enjoyed the first book of the series so was eager to read this second novel. The characters are terrific and I already feel as if I know DCI Craig's team. The storyline was very believable and I just want more! Please tell me the next one will be coming soon! So nice to have a book set in Belfast which is exciting instead of depressing.

This is the second novel in this series, and it's every bit as good as the first. It's always refreshing to find new authors, and every credit must go to Crooked Cat for their support of new writers. My sincere thanks to Linda Regan for recommending Catriona, who also takes the time to engage personally on-line with her fans.

An excellent read with good characters and absorbing story line, made all the more enjoyable by the familiar locations. I also enjoyed A Limited Justice and I now feel that after reading both novels that I would know Marc Craig if I met him, Miss King has made her characters very believable.
