Product Description

Synopsis

The Granada circuit of cinemas was notable for its distinctive architectural style, provided by Russian-born designer Theodore Komisarjevsky, and for the aggressive promotional flair of its head, Sidney Bernstein. Granadas frequently hosted live shows, including pantomimes, and were always called "theatres". Many have been listed as buildings of outstanding architectural and social interest. Drawing on information derived from the later Lord Berstein papers and from interviews with former managers and film bookers, this history covers all the circuit's buildings. Many photographs have been reprinted from the original negatives, and numerous examples of advertisements are reproduced. Allen Ayles is a film historian whose earlier studies of British cinema circuits are "ABC: The First Name in Entertainment" and "Gaumont British Cinemas".

Format:Paperback
A highly informative and interesting book looking into the history of the Granada cinema chain, covering all aspects.
Took me back down memory lane to the time of our own majestic Granada cinema here in Mansfield UK when i was a boy, unfortunately now long gone and replaced with a shopping mall.
A recommended book to have.

You really cannot go wrong buying a cinema book written by Allen Eyles. A comprehensive history, easy to read, with first class photographs that you will have problems in finding elsewhere. The Granadas were special and there are at least two jewels in their crown - Tooting and Woolwich - which are both well documented in this work. Like Allen's works relating to other cinema chains - Odeon 1 and 2, Gaumont, ABC, and I've probably missed some out - these are probably the best books on the subject you will find. Pity that it is likely that you will have to source a good used copy - but I recall that the Granada book was one of the easier ones to find at the time!

The Definative Book 28 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
This is one of a series of books that have been written by the author in relation to the major cinema chains of the UK.Whilst Granada was not the biggest in size when compared with Rank it had some of the most outstanding cinemas ever built in this country. It is a tribute to Sydney Bernstein and Theodore Komarchevesky that the magnificent Granda Tooting has the unique accoldae of being listed Grade 1.I suppose the major problem with his cinemas that survive today is to find a suitable alternative use.The Granada Harrow has been turned into a gym.those of us who have seen this abomination can only remember with nostalgia the days when it was a cinema with Ena Barga playing the organ. Also the forelorn Granada Walthamstow left to decay on the indecision of the local authority. This book is full of photos of these marvellous buildings.Anyone interested in architecture in general and cinemas in particular should buy this book.
