Book Description

'Is marketing making us ill?' That is the question marketer and coach Lynn Serafinn poses in this eye-opening, informative and inspiring read. A bold, holistic and often spiritual examination not merely of the world of advertising, but also of our entire world view, this book reveals how our relationships with Self, others, our businesses, our economy and the Earth impact every aspect of our lives. Addressing both the conscious and unconscious mechanics of marketing, Lynn shows the impact consumer culture has upon our health, our economy and the delicate ecological balance of our natural world. As much for the conscious consumer as the business owner, this book shows why traditional ways of selling are ultimately doomed to fail, and how both business owners and consumers can begin to heal the world by embracing a new paradigm Lynn calls 'The 7 Graces of Marketing.'

From the Author

This is a book of questions, not a manual of answers. And I shall make no apologies for the fact that you are quite likely to have many more questions after you have finished reading this book than when you began...Instead of needing to find all the answers, let us agree to engage in the free dialogue of ideas. Let us unlock any barriers that may lie between us. Let us see and respect each other for what we all are: sentient, intelligent beings, who are made of the same `stuff' and who share the same planet. Let us see and hear each other. Let us allow ourselves to be seen and heard. And now, with that in mind, let us begin with the first question of this book, and the one that will underpin all the other questions to follow: `Is marketing making us ill?'

So let the dialogue begin...

5.0 out of 5 stars Bob Dylan 6 Dec. 2011
`Why is Lynn's book what we (marketers) and the world needs? Here's an anecdote: Yesterday I was listening to a radio interview with a famous photographer talking about Bob Dylan and his CD covers. At some point he said, `That particular CD cover was so true, so authentic, so real. Do you know why? Because it was NOT chosen by marketers but by Bob Dylan himself!' I felt a sting in my true, authentic, marketing heart. Like that, The 7 Graces of Marketing brings authenticity back into our marketing. Marketeers of all ages, experiences, regions and specialisms: read this book and take care not only of our customers and our planet, but also our profession and image.'

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT JUST FOR BUSINESS, FOR LIFE! 26 Dec. 2011
Reading Lynn's book is like being engaged in a conversation with the author as Lynn's powerful voice reach across the pages into your heart, the connection place of the Earth.

Storytelling is a powerful way of conveying a message, and Lynn uses it both to highlight the sins and the graces, and it makes everything clear and easy to understand.

You don't have to run a business to benefit from this book, in fact, I think it should be on most college course's reading lists; as the graces of this book could be expanded and applied in more settings than just business and marketing. Actually it's a book for everyone. As a new author, of a spiritual fiction/fantasy story for tweens and teens, I bought this book to learn about marketing and without claiming any of the many bonuses on offer I got plenty of extras in the form of self healing, self realisation and self knowledge.

Lynn smashes the usual interpretation of karma, a universal law of reward and punishment and shows us what it really is; a belief in bad luck, fate or whatever you call having no choice. I like it.

Lynn's definition of abundance is spot on. As an early school leaver, I worked with recycling in the mid 80's, and I could see the effect of old style marketing in the massive amounts of stuff coming in every day, it was never ending, but instead of feeling richness, I felt disconnection and sadness when sorting and dividing. People didn't feel more abundant in the Swedish economic boom of the 80's than they did during the Celtic Tiger in Ireland because abundance is about what you are being, not what you have. Of course, working for a charity I wasn't supposed to feel like that, we had stuff in abundance what was wrong with that?

5.0 out of 5 stars Good business is possible 6 Dec. 2011
When we apply all that is creative, inspirational and authenic about our work and our products and use integrity to offer it to the market, we really can make a positive difference, enhancing and enriching the lives of all, whilst still sustaining a good living. The ideas and discussions in this well thoughtout and intelligently written book allow us the opportunity to lift 'marketing' out of the gutter and elevate it into a thing of integrity.

I found the book very easy to read and found myself relating to the author and her experiences.

There are lots of books that deal with ethics or CSR or green issues for the business sector but this is the first book i've seen that has brought these strands together under the banner of marketing. As such i found that the book often discussed, quite clearly, ideas and thoughts that i'd been having but was struggling to articulate. This book brought together many pieces of the puzzle into one coherent picture.

A good book, especially for those who don't quite feel they fit into mainstream business and marketing culture and feel there's a better way to get their stuff sold. Loved the table that compares the 7 deadly sins and the 7 graces of marketing. I felt it presents a rounded idea of the state of the world we're in and just where we could improve.

5.0 out of 5 stars The new paradigm of marketing 7 Dec. 2011
People who effect great change in the world are usually courageous individuals...For them, it is not enough just to see the paradigm shift; they know a personal commitment to that change is essential.

In The 7 Graces of Marketing, Lynn Serafinn courageously follows in the path of those who have stood up for what was once the contrarian view. She asks a huge question, and answers it with the precision of the academic she is, pointing the way to what will surely become the new paradigm of marketing.
