This book changed my life and sent me back to my Bible to see for myself just what it means to be really free! Free from the penalty of sin; free from the power of sin, free from the fear of failing and free from the fear of dying. To know the presence of Christ 'in you' is the most liberating experience in the world and He sets you free to love, laugh and enjoy life to the full - in Him. The Christian life is not just difficult - it is impossible and can only be lived by Christ Himself. This book set my wife and myself free from the legalism and condemnation that exists in many churches today and has enabled us to grow daily knowing that we can trust Jesus to keep on changing us to become more like him, day by glorious day.

Few could disagree that Charles Swindoll is a gifted communicator, both through the written and spoken (worldwide Christian radio) media. As an author or co-author now of over seventy successful books, he has had a tremendous impact in spreading the Christian gospel message around the globe. I was blessed to be able to sit for ten years under his pastorship.

The Grace Awakening, Swindoll's best-selling work, is able to systematically respond to and dismantle movements of legalism within the Christian community. Never bombastic in its approach, the book always treats Christians of other persuasions with respect. It truly presents the message of grace "graciously."

I particularly enjoyed the rich imagery in the book, such as the retelling of the story of freed Civil-War era slaves who, although emancipated, nevertheless refused to leave the plantations---a striking portraiture of Christians who remain in legalistic bondage, inspite of the freedom that Christ wishes for them to experience.

For additional reading, I recommend highly:

Until the moment I invited Christ into my life, I didn't want to be a Christian. Since then (May 1998) I've eagerly sought to know more of Him. This book has opened up the Scriptures to me in a very special way. It has helped me to understand more of God's forgiveness and how to apply His forgiveness through me to other people - to live His Grace, not just to believe in it.
Many of the Scriptures have depths to them that are not apparent to the spiritually immature. Other Scriptures have historical backgrounds, and cultural meanings which the un-studied Bible student may not understand. Charles Swindoll does an excellent job of explaining these, relating them to present-day situations, and most importantly of all, to real people. He draws deeply on his own experiences, lessons and friends in order to present God's love for our failings, and how we can have that same love for others.

Charles Swindoll has an amazing gift of being able to express and communicate the Grace of God in a way that ordinary folks can understand - he does it with humour and humility, a winning combination. I would strongly reccommend this book to anyone who has grown up in an organisation where legalism rules - it will set you free!

This book is definitely an eye opener to many overlooked aspects of grace. It will make you rethink about many aspects of your walk with God. You will also be challenged to look at things that seem to be the norm in a different light. It is a must read for anyone who really wants to understand grace
