A few years back, my first sight of Sister Rosetta was some old black and white footage of her fronting a Gospel choir and accompanying herself on a white Gibson SG. The incongruous sight of this middle-aged woman appropriately dressed in her Sunday best but shredding an electric guitar like Hendrix transfixed me and I've been fascinated by her ever since. This release (bought as a present for my 75-year-old mother whose now become a fan too) can't be faulted, including as it does the best of her sacred songs but also a representative example of her pop tunes. That short-lived career move wasn't her own choice and 'though many claim that it was ill-advised, I personally find these choices very entertaining also. From the album's title, they might have got away with excluding this stuff, but I'm glad they didn't, even if it is put in the shade a bit by the Gospel tracks on which she's clearly on more comfortable ground.

This album takes pride of place in my music collection. Rosetta Tharpe has to be one of the most underrated singers and guitarists of her generation. Ever since I heard Derek Trucks playing her music I wanted to find out more. Check out the last in the series of the American Folks Blues dvd series to see her playing a white 61 triple humbucker SG Custom with style and class...

Remarkable playing and singing from a lady who was once a household name (particularly in the USA), and quite a controversial one at that. Most of the content was unfamiliar to me, but there is huge atmosphere to be enjoyed, enhanced if you read the performer's life story.
Rather variable quality recordings, but nothing excruciating.

A bit of a waste of money as most of the tracks I have already on a cheaper cd Up Above my Head. Amazon should make available a track list for all cds.
