J.C.Ryle's exposition of Mark's gospel will bless any one who truly desires to grow in the knowledge,grace and truth in the the Lord Jesus Christ's finished work of redemption on the cross.
Ryle, in his customarily scholarly, yet easy to follow treatment of the second gospel, examines minutely, under the microscope, as it were, the Saviour's footsteps throughout His earthly ministry.
At this late hour when the doctrines of grace are coming under fierce attack, even from within the ranks of professing Christianity, so-called, there is an utmost urgency to cling to the Saviour.
It is my belief, that even when you have 'read' this volume, you will use it as an invaluable source of reference in your future studies of the Abiding Word of God.
Ryle's insights never enter into the realms of speculation, as many do today. He truly was a man grounded in the doctrines of grace.
Written in another age, but, even more relevant today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Know Jesus better. 8 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If, like me, your walk with Jesus is not straightforward then this book will undoubtedly help. I'm only at Mark 3 but already the author has helped me understand my saviour better than I have in the 7 years since He saved me. My big issue remains staying in Him and I need so much more than an excellent commentary to do that but this book will definitely 'open the eyes of your heart' and bring you closer to knowing our wonderful Lord and saviour than the bible will on its own.
Please Jesus keep me in you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Far better than a two-star man! 30 July 2013
By John Vanvoorhis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am quite amazed that previous reviewers have only rated Bishop J. C. Ryle with two stars. A 19th century man he was, but his commentaries are, in my judgment, almost unparalleled as useful and highly edifying reflections on the Bible and matters of Christian life and experience.

In the latter half of the 19th century, Ryle stood out in the Church of England as a defender of the historic Christian faith. But he is not a man whose works are outdated. For the ordinary men and women of the pew, his writing is exceptionally clear and readable. My departed wife of 52 years and I found his commentaries on the Gospels to be of great benefit for our family devotions. In addition to his commentaries on all the Gospels, his books, particularly "Holiness" and "Practical Religion" should be must-reads for all those who wish to know Scripture and follow its principles. Highly recommended!
2.0 out of 5 stars No table of contents 8 Feb 2012

Very disappointed that no table of contents is available. That makes the commentary nearly unusable. Even at only $1, this product is disappointing.

The principal work of every faithful minister of the Gospel, is to set the Lord Jesus fully before His people, and to show them His fullness and His power to save. The next great work He has to do, is to set before them the work of the Holy Spirit, and the need of being born again, and inwardly baptized by His grace. "e;
