Product Description

Guardian

You have to hand it to him [Archer]. He aims high. And sometimes
he hits the bull's eye.

Bloomberg

The odd thing is that Archer's defense, written in Biblical verse
is an engaging work worthy of reflection as Easter approaches.

As a backdrop to the approved gospels, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Nag Hammadi Library, Bible Code and such, make interesting reading and it is in these Archer has found his material for this piece of historical fiction. Not an original story and well outside Jeffrey Archer's normal parameters, although I am an Archer (the writer) fan, I found it disappointing and nowhere hear his best. Having written that, it is worth a read.

One star is too many 25 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book trades on the interest in material such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Nag Hammadi Library, the Bible Code and as such, like the character trait of the subject, is somewhat deceptive. It is a 'historical fiction' which I personally didn't find it a good read.

One star is too high 25 May 2012
Format:Hardcover
It's difficult to choose what is worst about this book. Whether it's the dumbed-down language, the dull retelling of gospel scenes as if to an idiot child or the contradictions (Judas couldn't have been hanged because Jews don't take their own lives. Several pages on the historical fact that Jews committed suicide at Masada is recalled. No, none of these comes close to the real menace of this work. While attempting to rehabilitate Judas, Archer blithely has the Jews calling for Jesus' downfall. And why not, as long as you ignore the lack of any historical evidence to support this event, and keep quiet about the gospels being written at a time to appease Roman authority after Jewish uprisings.

The idea behind this book is commendable, the excecution is not, and ultimately promises to promulgate naive and racist ideas.
