Product Description

Review

"In the fifty years since Bob Dylan became Bob Dylan, his music has been asking hard questions--and finding powerful answers--about life, love, faith, and justice. Now Michael Gilmour faithfully listens to and thoughtfully writes about Dylan in a way that brings those powerful answers to life. {i>The Gospel according to Bob Dylan" is a book for anyone who knows good music can teach us about what really matters." Greg Garrett, author of "We Get to Carry Each Other: The Gospel according to U2" and "The Other Jesus"

Product Description

Since the early 1960s, music fans have found Bob Dylan's spirituality fascinating, and many of them have identified Dylan as a kind of spiritual guru. This book, written by a scholar who is a longtime fan, examines Dylan's mystique, asking why audiences respond to him as a spiritual guide. This book reveals Bob Dylan as a major twentieth- and twenty-first-century religious thinker with a body of relevant work that goes far beyond a handful of gospel albums.

Ain't Talkin' 23 May 2011
Format:Paperback
Not a bad book. Discusses Dylan's lifetime religiosity in his songs. Interesting stuff explored along the way, and--as always---Dylan tidbits that I never knew before.
The title, fortunately, is a little misleading as the book never really goes off on an explanation of "The Gospel According to Bob Dylan", but I was glad for that. Art is for the receiver to create its own meaning for themselves. Speaking of which, "Ain't Talkin' " is my new Our Father.

Thoughtful and Well Researched 20 Aug 2011
By Christilles - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a thoughtful and well-researched exploration of the Biblical inspirations for many of Bob Dylan's songs. Gilmour is an excellent scholar who makes use of a number of sources to bring to light connections between Dylan's work and both the Old and New Testaments. This is an important contribution to Dylan scholarship.

Provocatively Insightful 8 Dec 2011
By Ramblin' Ray - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
It took me a while to read, which is par for me, but i'd highly recommend this book. There are not a lot of imposing theological presuppositions here, but some clear insights and worthwhile provocations.
