I throughly enjoyed reading this book and the pictures brought back memories of my childhood. There is information in it for everyone who grew up there. It was interesting remembering the area as it was and the massive change that has taken place. I am sure that not everyone is aware that 'The Gorbals Village' stretched as far as Govanhill. I would recomend it for everyone who lived in the area up to the 1960's

5.0 out of 5 stars GORBALS BORN 16 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
RECENTLY JOINED A FAMILY HISTORY GROUP AND THIS BOOK WAS INVALUABLE AND HELPED ME IDENTIFY WHERE MY ANCESTORS SETTLED WHEN THEY CAME TO GLASGOW (FROM THE HIGHLANDS AND FROM IRELAND)IN THE 19TH CENTURY. FABULOUS PHOTOS - IT IS AMAZING HOW LITTLE CHANGED RIGHT UP TO THE 1960S - I WAS BROUGHT UP IN TRADESTON (NEARBY) TILL 1960s AND RECOGNISED AND REMEMBERED MANY OF THE PHOTOGRAPHED AREAS. MY FAMILY HAD SETTLED IN HUTHCHESONTOWN BUT THE BOOK DID NOT RESTRICT ITSELF TO GORBALS PROPER BUT ALSO COVERED AREAS LIKE HUTCHESONTOWN AND TRADESTON AND OLD RUTHERGLEN DISTRICTS THAT BORDERED WITH GORBALS.

THIS WOULD MAKE A WONDERFUL GIFT FOR THOSE NOSTALGIC FOR A TIME AND PLACE NOW ONLY PERHAPS AVAILABLE FROM OLD PHOTOS AND PERSONAL MEMORIES. GLASGOW TOWN COUNCIL (BIGGEST VANDALS IN EUROPE SINCE ATILLA THE HUN) DESTROYED MOST OF THE PLACES PHOTOGRAPHIED IN THE 1960s.

CAN'T RECOMMEND HIGHLY ENOUGH - AT LEAST 4 OF MY FAMILY HISTORY GROUP TO WHOM I LOANED MY COPY INTEND TO PURCHASE THE BOOK EITHER FOR THEMSELVES OR AS A GIFT FOR SOMEONE ELSE.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gorbals of old times 19 Feb 2013
By Dancer.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was most satisfied with this book of the Gorbals area of Glasgow where I grew up as a boy, the pictures took me back down memory lane and each photo has a short note written about the street or Rd that it shows. Anybody from the old Gorbals up to the early 1970's do yourself a favour and buy a copy.
