4.0 out of 5 stars Full of Flavour 20 Mar. 2013

Think Conan, but with knobs on. It's easy to make clever remarks about the writing style, the world itself is slightly derivative in nature and the characters are not, shall we say, always fully drawn. But the colour and flavour of a barbaric and rather grand world flow through the pages like a rich river, and this pays for a lot. You are able to live it. I also like the device whereby the reader is led via the first-person narrative of the protagonist, Tarl Cabot, to understand far more thanTarl does about what is going on around him.

This is not everybody's book. Some of its assumptions will startle people, and if they are the sort that take their gender politics too seriously then they might be offended. But as escapism that requires no intellectual effort at all on the reader's part to carry him or her through a couple of quiet hours, it has a lot going for it. To my surprise, I long ago found myself going back to these books for more than one reading; you may find the same.

3.0 out of 5 stars Adventures In Misogyny 18 July 2015

I bought this because I loved the series as a teenager. Turns out there was a reason for that ... the misogynistic nature of the culture on Gor can only be built for boys of that age. I managed to re-read 5 of the books in this series then pretty much gave up the ghost. Ultimately it's readable but it isn't exactly great particularly within the context of modern "enlightened" society.

Read as a teenager and thought they were great. Now dated and poorly written.
