Absolutely fantastic addition to any Graphic Novel collection. I had no idea what to expect when I first braved the pages of the mind of Eric Powell, but this edition is an entertaining, action-packed and hilarious collection.

The Goon is a marvellously diverse character whose brutish adventures, crude attempts at empathy and never-say-die skull-bashing make for enjoyable reading. His sidekick Frankie, however, is the true comic genius of the duo, as what he lacks in braun, he makes up for with quick wit and (extremely violent) slapstick comedy.

Woe betide zombies and vampires who cross the path of The Goon, but so too those unfortunate characters who don't read this marvel of modern comic-book fiction. Don't let Frankie down, or he may have a surpise in store that no one wants to get (#knifeTOtheEYE)

What started the Eisner winning series! 27 Sept. 2011

The Goon is my favorite comic The Walking Dead being the follow up ). I love 20's - 60's period pieces, I love zombies and I love comedy. This is all of them mashed into one.

ART: This is the first ever Goon comic so the art is meh. It's truthfully not that good. Even Powell say's so in the beginning. Also, at the end there is a drawing/sketches part showing the early model's of the characters.

BOOK: The book is a standard trade-paper back. If you have ever seen a comic collection, it will be like that.

STORY: The story is pretty decent. Not as intelligent as the newer one's but remember, this is his first.

Overall, if you starting off, get this issue. It's essential to anyone collecting The Goon.

Long live The Goon!

The Goon and Franky make a great first impression 13 Aug. 2013
By Robert Fisher - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I have seen copies of The Goon graphic novels but up until now, I had done no more than some glancing. Recently, I found a Goon bookmark that had a thumbnail description of the idea of the series. That got me curious and the other day, I came across The Goon: Rough Stuff. Obviously, I cannot write as one familiar with the series, but as a new reader, I came away quite impressed with The Goon and his sidekick Franky, a pair of underworld enforcers trying to stop zombies from taking over the local crime scene. At the start of this volume, creator Eric Powell notes that this was the first Goon storyline and both the writing and art would improve in later volumes (The Goon and Franky concur in an intro of their own). If this is supposed to be the inferior stuff, I am looking forward to seeing what The Goon is like when it hits its stride. I enjoyed the sick humor; it was similar to Roman Dirge's Lenore, a favorite of mine (I particularly liked the story of the fellow who unwisely asked them to perform an exorcism). The Goon and Franky at a couple of points recalled an adventure in Chinatown that hints at something big. That called to mind John Ostrander's Grimjack, which is my gold standard for judging other comics. Grimjack would have similar reminiscences that later developed into notable plots, so this is another point in The Goon's favor. I enjoyed both this volume and the promise that reading further volumes shall prove most rewarding.

Been reading the Goon since it came out and finally had decided to buy the volumes. Highly recommend to anyone who likes comics and/or hilarious reading. Hopefully that movie ends up coming out one of these days.
