Book Description

2 Feb 2012 BBC Records
Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe star in two classic BBC Radio episodes, "The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea" and "The Histories of Pliny the Elder". "The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea": No less than 38 Batter Puddings have been hurled at Minnie Bannister, the world famous poker player. (Give her a good poker and she'll play any tune you like.) A madman is at large - so it's time to call in Scotland Yard! "The Histories of Pliny the Elder": The mighty Julius Caesar has invaded Ancient Briton, only to be greeted by none other than Eccles. Undeterred, Caesar and the might of the Roman army prepare for battle, while the Britons prepare for a game of football. However, Caracticus Seagoon will never surrender to Rome - he will fight them up the hill and down Mrs Dale. "Vintage Beeb": classic albums first available as BBC LPs, now on CD for the first time ever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go On Be a Devil 21 Feb 2012
By Mr. Glenn Cook TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I really enjoyed these 2 episodes of the Goon Show.
I had of course heard many on them before both as repeats and from cassettes so the chance to listen on a CD in the car once more was wonderful.
In the first The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea (A war time location of the author Spike Milligan)
Minnie Baxter keeps being assaulted by hurtling batter puddings, but who could the hurler be? With no luck, the local police force have to call in Scotland Yard are called to investigate. And my what fun we have with a wonderful array of off the wall characters. Each and everyone beloved.
More is to follow in the second. The Histories of Pliny the Elder. Caraticus Seagoon (Harry Secome) finds himself captured and taken to the Coliseum and it's not to watch a film!

Here is a gripe. Why only 2 episodes on a CD surely this merits a 2 CD box set at least? Why include two episodes from 1954 and 1957? So one star deducted for that alone.
This will drive completists nuts. Although I suspect many will already have them on cassette and MP3s
Like many I have experienced a problem with the sound I may be old but I really had to crank up the speakers to get a decent level.
So what do we have.
Two brilliant shows with a massive 3 years between original broadcasts.
A worry that if we collect the CDs there will be duplications. Yet another method of collecting the Goons with all the added expense?

If you have not heard the Goons and don't know where to start you could do a whole lot worse than starting here.

BUT you will be addicted!! So beware.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Goons! 22 Mar 2012
By pacem et amorem VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Whilst I acknowledge that the Goon Show is, for many, an acquired taste, I personally love it! Yes it is not consistently brilliant - some episodes are exceptional, some not - but it is genius and has as its cast some of the brightest lights in British comedy history.
Whilst only two episodes are included on this CD (hence the 4 star rating) you get some great comedy and I laughed until my sides were sore. All the favourites of the Goon Show are here ... along with wonderfully surreal, madcap scripts.
Get this and laugh yourself silly!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not their finest half hours 11 Mar 2012
By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The Goon Show is a curious beast, and a wildly inconsistent one at that. It's easy to understand why it was so influential in its day, its energetic surrealism and nonsense breaking the shackles of the more formulaic radio comedy while harking back to the likes of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. The problem is that, heard today, many episodes really are surprisingly poor - for every Great Tuscan Salami Scandal, which still holds up as one of radio's funniest half hours, it seems like there are a dozen that fall flat, and sadly the first of the two episodes on this set, The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea" and "The Histories of Pliny the Elder". "The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea, does just that. The silliness is there, but not the inspiration, and it plays too much like an over-extended schoolboy sketch. Thankfully The Histories of Pliny the Elder is rather better, a very 1066 and All That view of the Roman Invasion of Britain which, naturally, manages to round up the usual suspects. It's a long way from being a classic episode, but at least it provides a few smiles along the way.
