Notwithstanding the alluring picture on the cover of this new Season 3 box-set, which presumably hints at lead character Alicia Florrick's somewhat more raunchy early-season activity, The Good Wife's third series continued to deliver mainstream legal drama with a cutting edge, and no small slice of tongue-in-cheek irony thrown in for good measure. One might wonder, for example, just how many goofy, offbeat and thoroughly bizarre circuit judges Cook County could have; while Dylan Baker's charmingly psychotic Colin Sweeney, Lisa Edelstein's (fresh from a lengthy stint on House) sex-mad Celeste Serano, Anna Camp's sweet-as-pie Caitlin D'arcy, and Matthew Perry's brilliant against-type, hyper-ambitious Mike Kresteva, are all new or recurring characters thrown into the brilliantly concocted mix.

Sustaining comic touches in relatively serious drama series is never an easy trick to pull off season after season, and yet The Good Wife keeps us amused, fascinated and horrified week after entertaining week. How evil can Jackie Florrick get in her bid to see her son rise to the top of the political ladder and destroy Alicia in the process? Just how complicated is Kalinda's back-story not to mention her relationship with FBI officers? How many times can Michael J. Fox's sly Louis Canning be defeated in court; has Cary really come back to the bright side, and what exactly did go on at those basketball games with Will and half of Chicago's bench? And at the centre of all this, Juliana Margulies's Emmy in 2011 was rich reward for sustaining the emotional fulcrum of a series that continues to reach new heights for mainstream American TV shows. Thoroughly recommended.

Alicia had a tough time in Season 2 with ex-husband Peter and ex-BFF Kalinda, her lust for Will, and of course still balancing kids and work, so it's great to see the new, hotter and, frankly, pissed-off Alicia enter the stage from the beginning of this season. This Alicia kicks a** in court and it's great to see how her character develops -it just goes to show how well cast Julianna Margulies is for this role!

Actually the whole cast is fab, but it takes a while for this season's cases, characters and brilliance (other than Alicia as mentioned before) to really take off - Badass Kalinda being a point in case. Her and Alicia's relationship could be used for building igloos as the season starts and her romantic relationships are as per usual complicated - although I could definitely see her with a certain FBI agent if she would just stop trying to get Kalinda into trouble for one moment, that is...

The usual interplay between Peter/Alicia, Alicia/Will, Alicia/Kalinda, Kalinda/Cary, Cary/Alicia, Cary/Will, Alicia/Michael J. Fox (sorry can't remember the character's name), Kalinda/Lana, Alicia/Diane etc. is top quality and a testament to the acting skills of everybody involved.

This season is a bit scattered at times and as I mentioned previously takes a while to get going, but it always provides entertainment and the show is still cool, sexy, and funny - and it comes with one of the best season finales I've seen - and one that will definitely keep me hooked for season 4!

I have watched this on TV, so this is a comment merely on the quality of the series - not the DVD contents.

This great series goes from strength to strength, Alicia ever more firmly in control. She is proving a great asset to Lockhart/Gardner - especially with the law firm now often in deep trouble, senior partner Will particularly. Still she manages to be a caring mother to teens Zach and Grace, despite financial problems as eviction looms and a new school is needed. Separated husband Peter continues to strive, by fair means or foul, to entice her back to boost his career. Currently District Attorney, he sets his sights on becoming State Governor.

22 episodes, evidence throughout of intricate plotting with strong storylines ingeniously interwoven. Intriguing court cases often delve deeply into moral matters and do not always work out as hoped. All the way through there are undercurrents, secret agendas, dirty tricks, surprises, humour too - as when colleagues jostle to fill a vacancy.

As ever Julianne Margulies is superb as Alicia. She heads a great cast. Amongst special delights? Resourceful boss Diane; awesomely persistent researcher Kalinda; once ultra-ambitious Cary, now with so much food for thought. Always a pleasure is Alan Cummings as wily, manipulative Eli. Guest stars include Michael J. Fox, entertainingly as devious as can be. Fans of "Friends" may be surprised by Matthew Perry, here playing a brazen liar so full of charm - he clearly destined to rise high in politics.

Interesting bonuses include eavesdropping on a script conference, a chance to see how the interplay of disparate ideas helps produce one of the most sparkling episodes.

The past few evenings have given much pleasure, this a series succeeding at every level.
