The Good Times is the debut album from Afroman, the first hip-hop-flavoured novelty act of the 21st century. Cross 1970s smut poet Rudy Ray Moore with 90s comedic rappers the Afros, marinate them in malt liquor, and what do you get?--Afroman. The self-proclaimed hungry hustler's unabashed take on American rap from a blaxploitation point of view consists of a laid-back delivery and funky yarns loosely flowing over wah-wah guitar grooves and Hammond organ riffs. It's guaranteed to amuse some listeners and offend many, many more. One glance at The Good Times' track listing should help you decide into which camp you'll fall. The subject matter of tunes such as "Because I Got High" (also featured on the Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back Soundtrack) and "Let's All Get Drunk" is readily apparent. Afroman and crew sound like they're having a great old time laying it down, and at least one song on this album will make you laugh. --Rebecca Levine

"One-Hit-Wonder" Afroman gained popularity back in 2001 with super-hit "Because I Got High" and although many may regard him as a one trick pony "Good Times" is packed with great tracks, funny raps, old school beats and for good measure, some Soul Afro.
Although the album weighs in at about 40 minutes playing time I'd say (excluding American Dream which shamelessly takes The Because I Got High Beat for some Afroman Ranting) it is full of quality tracks. Afro has a lyrical talent and displays brilliant comical timing with classic lines such as "We'll be thinking bout surviving/ when we're drinking and we're driving"
Anyone expecting Lil' John style mega beats or in your face 50 Cent generic gangster trash is in the wrong place. Afroman's beats work on a less-is-more basis which works well with his mellow flows, tracks like "Tall Cans" and "Palmdale" (a personal favorite) sound like they've been locked in a vault since the 80's which is not to discredit it, you'll either love it or you'll hate it.
Funny, up-lifting and still to this day his best work, if you are going to buy any Afro Album this is the one...

I bought this album with the mentality that all of the songs would be ridiculous and not of a serious nature but to my surprise the album is actually quite alright. Songs such 'tumbleweed' and 'palmdale' are all really catchy tunes that would be suitable for chart release if it only was'nt for their explicit content.

The good times is one the best CD's you could ever have in your collection, as well as the well known songs there are a couple that might surprise you. Lyrically execelent, the timings are awesome, truly needed in any collection.
