Product Description

Review

Compared to the emotional and financial cost of making the wrong choice, your funny and opinionated guide is the best money I have spent on my child all year. Thank you so much. -- A parent

Like its predecessors, it is based on visits and the views of parents, pupils and staff. It is just as untroubled by the sensibilities of schools -- and as cavalier in the face of squawks from those it has offended. -- TES

Unique among the many guides available, it sets out to give frank answers to the questions every parent asks. It told the truth.
-- The Daily Telegraph

3.0 out of 5 stars Only the good schools 27 Mar 2009

This book is useful and informative if you happen to have several good schools in your area. It would be a great help in starting to work out which you'd like your child to attend. It turns out we don't have any good schools near us, and as it's only the GOOD schools guide, we're left with no information at all about what they think about the best of the rest. There's a map at the front showing the location of good schools (interestingly, they cluster together) which we will consult closely if we ever move house, but as it is, we live in a blank area and are none the wiser as to what the schools available to us are like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun to read and very opinionated! 6 Feb 2009
Wonderful guide. I'd bought their SEN guide before which was good, but this includes a lot more schools. Some interesting advice, especially about how you can tell if your school is going to close suddenly - could be useful given the economic climate (although I REALLY hope not!!). The best part is the school reviews though. I thought it might be only private schools, but there were loads of state ones too which was just what we were looking for.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Good Schools Guide 21 Mar 2009
This book is a must have aid to parents trying to navigate the quagmire of choosing the right school for their little darlings. While I think Ofsted assesses the bones of a school such as how many teachers, subjects taught and so on...The Good Schools Guide uncovers its heart. I read the write up of my children's school and I was dazzled by its accuracy. It portrayed the culture of the place, warts and all, really well. I am in the throes of looking at schools again and so I am busy referring to the latest edition often. I am confident I will know what I am signing up in our next school, regardless of what it says on tin, using the Good Schools guide to get the inside track. When it comes to knowing schools, The good schools guide definitely gets top marks from me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not cover 50% of the UK private schools 12 Jun 2009

I bought this book so I could get reviews on all of the independent as well as state schools in the UK, but I wasted my money as 50% of the schools I was researching were not in this book.
Waste of money - I have found better info off Google.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful guide, to supplement your research 30 Jan 2010

I am just starting to research independent schools for my year 2 son, who is currently in an excellent state primary. Our local secondary schools are not so good, and so we are looking at private prep schools from age 9 or so, then moving on to independent secondary school. The book is a huge tome (1463 pages), and has proved a superb resource.

It does not cover all schools. Not even all private schools. Those that it does include (around 1000) are mostly very comprehensively detailed, but I was disappointed that 2 of the schools I am very interested in (both of which are generally very highly rated IE 'Good' schools) are missing. No state schools in our area are listed at all.

There is a great deal of excellent general advice in the introduction, about how to go about choosing schools etc including lots of invaluable info about how the system works.

All in all, a highly recommended book primarily if you are looking for an independent school, but you will need to read elsewhere as well. It is of limited use to those looking for state schools. A good investment for me, I think, but I do wish it was more comprehensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars The one and only 21 April 2009
Why didn't I buy this before?!! As far as I know it is the ONLY trustworthy source of info about schools written by people who know what they're talking about. We are moving house so have been trying to find out about schools a long way from where we live and this book is a gold mine. Plus, most importantly, it's fun to read - I find myself lying in bed reading about the misbehaviour of kids at a certain Scottish boarding school even though we're actually looking for a grammar school near London.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Schools Guide 13 Mar 2009
Very helpful book although a shame that it doesn't contain entries for ALL Good Schools. It points out in the introduction that if a school is not mentioned then it doesn't necessarily mean that it is not a good school, just that it hasn't been 'checked out'.

5.0 out of 5 stars what teacher never told you 2 Mar 2009
This book is very useful to the bemused parent of pre-teens. It's frank and full, well laid out, and you find yourself browsing happily, looking at schools 100s of miles away from your area as it's very readable and good fun. It has a lot about SEN provision which you don't usually find. overall, it tells you what you want to know, not what the schools want you to know.
