The Good Life has proved an enduring jewel in the BBC's mainstream comedy archive. More than 25 years after it first appeared in our living rooms, nostalgia must be a major reason for its appeal. A whole generation of young men--and their fathers--found the weekly sight of Felicity Kendal as Barbara Good, pert in denim dungarees, irresistible. But it's the quality of the playing that has really stood the test of time and triumphs over a premise--self-sufficiency in Surbiton--that now seems naïve. Even in 1975, a Tom Good (a masterpiece of comic eccentricity from Richard Briers) quitting the rat race would probably have sold up his semi and chanced his luck as a small holder somewhere more remote than suburban Surrey.
Comic tensions arise not just from the Goods' daily struggle to beat the system on their own terms, but also from the relationship with their incredulous, often horrified, but usually supportive neighbours. Penelope Keith's Margo Leadbetter remains one of the great comic creations in British sitcom history--a simmering volcano of conservatism waging her own battle against creeping mediocrity in all aspects of life, whose human frailty somehow keeps her loveable. I bought this for my wife. She usually does not spit coffee at the TV, but this was just too funny for her. We don't watch this with beverages anymore. It ages very well. It is still as freash as it was in the 70s. The cast is wonderful. Lots of laughs here.

Great, Great series, a pity we have had to wait so long for this and that it's not the whole of the episodes on one DVD. However, that said, this has to be my favourite comedy series of all time. Now I can watch it as many times as I wish and don't have to wait for the BBC re-runs! It's one of those series where all the elements come together to make a perfect whole, the script and the chemistry between the actors couldn't be better.

While the Good Life is one of the best BBC comedies ever, this DVD is lacking. It only includes 6 of the 7 episodes from season 1. Episode 7, Backs to the Wall, where the Good's first harvest is nearly ruined by a storm is missing and is not available on any of the other Good Life DVD's leaving you with a single episode short of a complete set. Whoever was responsible for this decision should be shot!

not complete series 1
Serves me right for not reading the other reviews before buying, but when it says 'complete series 1' it really ought to be the complete series, not missing one episode. Read more

Not the best series but still fun in parts
Series 4 is the weakest of the programme but still has moments. Anniversary, Sweet and Sour Charity are the two best of the bunch.

A british institution
Season 4 of "the good life" is as mentioned in another review, not the best episodes of the series as a whole. However there is still much laughter to be had. Read more
