Product Description

This fourth and final series release also contains the 1977 Christmas Special, and the 1978 Royal Command Performance which was filmed before The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. Celebrating 35 years since its original broadcast, and available for the first time in series order, this is the comedy series that put organic foods, self-sufficiency and green thinking on the map. Tom and Barbara continue to struggle against adversity and Margo on many fronts including manure, as they approach Margo s pony club for a steady supply of fertiliser. From making their own clothes with sheep s wool and stinging nettle dye to building chicken sheds and buying secondhand looms, they find their way through an assortment of challenges. And life for Margo and Jerry is not without its ups and downs as Jerry fights to succeed his boss at the office and Margo continues to spend, spend, spend. From Amazon.co.uk

The Good Life has proved an enduring jewel in the BBC's mainstream comedy archive. More than 25 years after it first appeared in our living rooms, nostalgia must be a major reason for its appeal. A whole generation of young men--and their fathers--found the weekly sight of Felicity Kendal as Barbara Good, pert in denim dungarees, irresistible. But it's the quality of the playing that has really stood the test of time and triumphs over a premise--self-sufficiency in Surbiton--that now seems naïve. Even in 1975, a Tom Good (a masterpiece of comic eccentricity from Richard Briers) quitting the rat race would probably have sold up his semi and chanced his luck as a small holder somewhere more remote than suburban Surrey.

Comic tensions arise not just from the Goods' daily struggle to beat the system on their own terms, but also from the relationship with their incredulous, often horrified, but usually supportive neighbours. Penelope Keith's Margo Leadbetter remains one of the great comic creations in British sitcom history--a simmering volcano of conservatism waging her own battle against creeping mediocrity in all aspects of life, whose human frailty somehow keeps her loveable. Paul Eddington as Jerry, her long-suffering husband, spars splendidly. These are happy memories indeed. --Piers Ford --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

By the time you get to the fourth series of any progamme you expect it to start loosing a bit of steam but that just isn't the case with The Good Life. It appears as if everyone involved in the production of this excellent title just got more and more comfortable with the roles as they matured and the comedy just got better and better.

What makes this final DVD release even stronger is the inclusion of The Royal Command Performance which was filmed live in front of an audience which included the Queen and Prince Philip.

If you only want to buy one Good Life DVD then buy the complete boxed set - if you only want to buy one series then this is the one for you.

I bought this for my wife. She usually does not spit coffee at the TV, but this was just too funny for her. We don't watch this with beverages anymore. It ages very well. It is still as freash as it was in the 70s. The cast is wonderful. Lots of laughs here.

Great, Great series, a pity we have had to wait so long for this and that it's not the whole of the episodes on one DVD. However, that said, this has to be my favourite comedy series of all time. Now I can watch it as many times as I wish and don't have to wait for the BBC re-runs! It's one of those series where all the elements come together to make a perfect whole, the script and the chemistry between the actors couldn't be better.

While the Good Life is one of the best BBC comedies ever, this DVD is lacking. It only includes 6 of the 7 episodes from season 1. Episode 7, Backs to the Wall, where the Good's first harvest is nearly ruined by a storm is missing and is not available on any of the other Good Life DVD's leaving you with a single episode short of a complete set. Whoever was responsible for this decision should be shot!

Arguably the best comedy series of its time, The Good Life is vintage laugh out loud British comedy with a good heart. Superb performances by Richard Briers and Felicity Kendal (who manages to still look hot in wellies and a raincoat)

I can remember watching this when I was a child and it was just as good to watch it as an adult. The scripts are brilliant the acting is fantastic. It made me laugh and laugh and laugh. It is a series you can watch over and over again and you keep seeing things that you may have missed before. This is a classic comedy and I could recommend it to anyone it really is one of the best ever produced and played.

Season 4 of "the good life" is as mentioned in another review, not the best episodes of the series as a whole. However there is still much laughter to be had. This season wipes the floor with most "comedy" programmes of today, the chemistry between characters and the quality of acting is second to none.
It is still a must have DVD purchase as there are plenty of episodes to get your teeth in, and the behind the scenes of the Royal episode make it worth the money alone.
